My novel, Hearts at War, features a white girl and a Japanese-American boy who are childhood friends whose growing attraction to one another in high school will be severed by war, family and social pressures once they enter college. They come of age in California and coincidence will throw them together again in the Pacific theater of war as they both serve in the military. Middle Ages Close Reading Passages | Digital & Print | 5th Grade & 6th Grade
By Creative Primary Literacy
A Google Forms reading comprehension bundle with eight individual activities about key events or key figures from the Middle Ages.
The activities, which come in PDF format too, have an informational text with comprehension and grammar questions followed by an extension task, are about the following people or topics:
The NO PREP informational text activities are ideal for distance learning and perfect for students in fifth grade or sixth grade. The resources, which also come in PDF format, allow students to learn key facts about history whilst working on their comprehension skills.
Included in each of the five activities:
⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻
This resource bundle is great for:
These activities are online resources, that use Google Forms, and are linked to your Google Drive. They can be completed by students online using tablets, phones or computers, and are easily assessed by teachers as all the answers are provided in a quick and easy format.
⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻
Time allowance to complete each activity:
5-10 minutes - read through the text individually.
40-50 minutes - answer questions using the text as guidance (including extension activity)
Time allowance to assess:
A class set of activities might take around 15-20 minutes to mark; the teacher can then send the students their marks automatically, which allows them to read back through their work. Nearly all answers are not automatically generated, but only require a small amount of work to assign points. This is because the aim is to get students writing answers and not to just have multiple choice options.
Please ensure when you download this resource into Google Drive that you are logged in to the gmail account where you wish to store the activity. In the past teachers have downloaded resources into their school account in error. Thanks :)

Rosa Parks | Figurative Language Short Passage Set | Women's History Month
By Perfectly Planned Designs
This Figurative Language Short Passage Set about Rosa Parks is a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. Use it during Women's History Month or any time of the year! Featuring Rosa Parks, this is a 216-word passage filled with 15 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! This figurative language passage set is rigorous, uses higher-level words and phrases, and in addition to merely identifying the different types, students will be asked to discuss the impact it has on the reader, as they’re asked to do on standardized testing. Check out my other figurative language passage sets here!
Simply print and go! There is truly no preparation needed, which is why this set is perfect to leave for sub plans, bell ringers, homework, test prep, review or assessment!
*As an optional review activity, use my No-prep Four Corners Figurative Language Activity resource for a fun whole-group game, then use this passage set for assessment!
Activity:
Students can complete all three worksheets as part of a packet, but I suggest using one each day. If you teach allusion, alliteration, idiom, or onomatopoeia, you can ask students to include those in Task 2 where they will be asked to continue the passage using a similar writing style. I have left some blanks on the checklist for this very purpose.
Reflection:
The class can review the answers and comments as a whole group when the activity is complete. You’ll be surprised how much better they’ll get at figurative language after being exposed to some high-quality examples!
