Women's History IS American History! This notebook includes a list of 35 Famous American Women with room to write notes for each individual. A page of reflection questions for further study, and two extra pages of notes. Using during Women's History Month, as daily bellwork, student projects, learning about various times in history, and more!

Celebrate Women History Month using this set of 7 of the most influential or Famous Women in Sports Reading Comprehension Passages. The passages are designed for students in grades 3, 4, 5, and 6.

Each passage features a short biography of a famous female athlete, followed by 8 multiple-choice questions that test the student’s understanding of the text.

The passages cover a range of sports, such as tennis, boxing, racing, the Boston Marathon, and soccer. The women in sports included in this set are:

• Mia Hamm: A soccer legend who won two World Cups and two Olympic gold medals, and became the all-time leading scorer in international soccer history.
• Wilma Rudolph: A sprinter who overcame polio and racism to become the first American woman to win three gold medals in a single Olympics.
• Serena Williams: A tennis superstar who has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, four Olympic gold medals, and numerous awards and honors.
• Billie Jean King: A tennis champion and activist who fought for gender equality and social justice on and off the court.
• Kathrine Switzer: A trailblazing runner who became the first woman to officially enter and finish the Boston Marathon, despite facing harassment and resistance from some officials and spectators.
• Danica Patrick: A racing driver who broke barriers and records in a male-dominated sport, and became the first woman to win an IndyCar Series race.
• Claressa Shields: A boxer who grew up in poverty and violence, and went on to become the first American boxer, male or female, to win two Olympic gold medals and four world titles in different weight classes

Primary Source Analysis and DBQ's

This 29-page Primary Source Analysis with DBQ's resource with 20 primary sources plus three DBQ prompts gives students a chance to delve deeper into the challenges, obstacles and finally the success of the suffrage movement. The first page includes an Overview, Notes on Primary Sources and Definitions.

Here’s a chance for students to read documents that shed light on various opinions in favor and against suffrage, the differences of opinions within the movement as to strategy and how racial segregation played a role in the movement.

Assign just one, a few or all of the sources depending on time constraints and student interest.

Primary sources include letters, photos, reports and other documents. Each page of primary sources includes questions at the end in order for students to analyze perspectives, consider key ideas and identify bias.

Included is a one-page sheet that explains what primary sources are and how to analyze them using specific questions through a process called HAPPY. There is also a page at the end for students to apply the HAPPY process to one source.

Three DBQ prompts are included at the end with instructions on how to create a response to the prompt. An Answer Key to all the questions and the DBQ prompts are available at the end of the packet.

A separate PowerPoint presentation on How to Integrate Sources for a DBQ is included in the Zip file. There is also a YouTube video that provides narration for the slides. The link is included in the packet.

There is also an Easel Activity which allows students to answer the questions at the end of each primary source online. For homework purposes, Home Schoolers or for asynchronous learning, this is an especially valuable digital option .

Reading Assignment

This four-page Reading Assignment and Worksheet provides an overview of the various activities, attributes and activities of women involved in the women's suffrage movement. It covers the time period from the end of the Civil War in 1865 through the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920. Students can read this on their own as a homework assignment or it can be a group activity in a classroom. As a close reading activity, it is also ideally suited for home-schoolers or independent learners who want to learn more. A Worksheet with questions based on the reading is included, along with an Answer Key. This resource helps students with reading comprehension.

Power Point Presentation

This 20-slide PowerPoint presentation covers the suffrage movement in the United States from 1865-1920. It is an ideal lesson for the post-Civil War and/or Progressive Era eras or as a stand-alone resource for women’s history. It is also a good resource during Women’s History Month.

Each slide contains information and graphics that highlight how the women's suffrage movement developed over these years. It highlights the many obstacles they faced, the different organizations that were formed, strategies employed and how suffrage was eventually achieved. Key women are highlighted including the giants of the era such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Carrie Chapman Catt, Ida B. Wells, and Alice Paul.

A digital assessment in Easel is provided for teachers to measure student understanding, retention and analysis of the material.

Looking for a** Female Writers**-themed, engaging and informative reading comprehension activity for Women's History Month? This scavenger hunt is designed to help students practice skim reading, looking for context clues, and learn some useful vocabulary.

It’s perfect for EFL / ESL students at the B1/B2 level and can also be used for native English classes at grade levels 5 - 7. With low prep, just print and hang, it contains 10 reading passages about 10 of the most influential female writers in history.

The scavenger hunt is designed so that students have to revisit and reread the reading passages multiple times when looking for code words. The first lesson is interactive and involves students cutting out facts, and then sorting these facts into paragraphs. In the second lesson the students need to use these facts to write four paragraphs. Then, in the third lesson children need to choose the most important facts and include these in an introduction; after this they need to answer several questions on a prompt sheet before writing up their conclusion. In the final lesson students need to check their draft paragraphs for mistakes before writing up their work on to a neat copy on the template provided.

Figurative Language Short Passage Sets are a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. Each passage has between 206-226 words and is filled with between 14-19 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! These figurative language passage sets are rigorous, use higher-level words and phrases, and in addition to merely identifying the different types, students will be asked to discuss the impact it has on the reader, as they’re asked to do on standardized testing. Simply print and go! There is truly no preparation needed, which is why this set is perfect to leave for sub plans, bell ringers, homework, test prep, review or assessment!

Four Corners Figurative Language Activity is a fun whole-group game or review activity. Your students will love moving around the room as you click through the 40 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. In this lesson, students choose a woman they feel contributed something important to society and then create a presentation about her and the contribution. A variety of choices are offered for the student to choose from, and also to allow teachers to use this lesson with the software they have available. Included with the lesson are resources for the teacher to introduce the lesson (including video options), resources for student research, as well as links to tutorials for different software choices if they are choosing to challenge themselves with something new. The finished products may be shared with the class as a presentation, or can be displayed on student workstations for other students to do a learning walk and view. This lesson was created for 8th grade students but is appropriate for students in grades 6-9.

Celebrate Black History Month with this thoughtful, engaging lesson on overcoming obstacles in Maya Angelou's renowned poem, "Still I Rise."

This lesson plan on Angelou's poem can be used in a variety of ways throughout the school year. For instance, the lesson is the perfect jumpstart for your unit on slavery, Civil Rights, poetry, or Women's Rights in America. It can also be used as a stand-alone lesson to get your students to reflect upon and discuss overcoming their own personal obstacles. Given the theme of the poem, the lesson even acts as a great medium for discussing how to to rise above bullying in a society where bullying is sadly so prevalent.
