Primary Source Analysis and DBQ's

This 21-page Primary Source Analysis with DBQ's resource with 24 primary sources plus two DBQ prompts gives students a chance to delve deeper into the women's changing roles and opportunities in society, along with the challenges that they faced. The first two pages includes an Overview, Notes on Primary Sources and Teaching Notes.

Here’s a chance for students to read documents that shed light on the increasing division between modern and traditional values, changing work and educational opportunities as well as cultural and artistic shifts.

Assign just one, a few or all of the sources depending on time constraints and student interest.

Primary sources include letters, photos, reports, newspaper articles and other documents. Each page of primary sources includes comprehension questions at the end in order for students to analyze perspectives, consider key ideas and identify bias.

Included is a one-page sheet that explains what primary sources are and how to analyze them using specific questions through a process called HAPPY. There is also a page at the end for students to apply the HAPPY process to one source.

Two DBQ prompts are included at the end with instructions on how to create a response to the prompt.

An Answer Key to all the questions and the DBQ prompts are available at the end of the packet.

A separate PowerPoint presentation on How to Integrate Sources for a DBQ is included in the Zip file. There is also a YouTube video that provides narration for the slides.

Reading Assignment

This 6-page Reading Assignment and Worksheet provides an overview of the developments in the 1920s and how they impacted women. It covers the time period from 1920 through 1929. Students can read this on their own as a homework assignment or it can be a group activity in a classroom. As a close reading activity, it is also ideally suited for home-schoolers or independent learners who want to learn more. A Worksheet with comprehension questions based on the reading is included, along with an Answer Key. This resource helps students with close reading and critical thinking.

Power Point Presentation

This 18-slide PowerPoint presentation covers women's experiences during the 1920s. It is an ideal lesson as a supplement to United States History or as a stand-alone resource for women’s history. It is also a good resource during Women’s History Month.

Each slide contains information and graphics that highlight how some women pursued new opportunities while others continued to champion traditional pathways. Slides also look at various experiences of different cultural and socio-economic groups.

The first lesson is interactive and involves students cutting out facts, and then sorting these facts into paragraphs. In the second lesson the students need to use these facts to write four paragraphs. Then, in the third lesson children need to choose the most important facts and include these in an introduction; after this they need to answer several questions on a prompt sheet before writing up their conclusion. In the final lesson students need to check their draft paragraphs for mistakes before writing up their work on to a neat copy on the template provided.

Figurative Language Short Passage Sets are a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. Each passage has between 206-226 words and is filled with between 14-19 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! These figurative language passage sets are rigorous, use higher-level words and phrases, and in addition to merely identifying the different types, students will be asked to discuss the impact it has on the reader, as they’re asked to do on standardized testing. Simply print and go! There is truly no preparation needed, which is why this set is perfect to leave for sub plans, bell ringers, homework, test prep, review or assessment!

In this lesson, students learn interesting facts about women who were involved with STEM careers and their contributions as they complete a WebQuest (Internet Scavenger Hunt) to answer questions about the topic. A complete answer key is provided for the WebQuest for easy grading, along with resources for both teachers and students. The student questions are included in both a print version and a digital (editable) version to make it easy for students to complete the lesson digitally or on paper. Also included with this lesson is a word search puzzle that includes an answer key, perfect for early finishers or as a part of the lesson.

In this full-length lesson plan, students will closely examine the final lines of Shakespearean characters before their deaths (if you know Shakespeare, there are quite a few!). Following a mini-lesson on the importance of these final words, students will take part in the classic game, Mafia, with a unique, Shakespearean twist. I invented the take on this game several years ago and it has become one of my students' and my favorite days of the whole school year. This product features an engaging "Literature Talk" activity that will have your students thinking, writing, speaking, and moving all in one class period. In this activity, they must choose between 6 different quotes about books and articulate why the quote aligns with their own perspective. ⭐Collaborative Writing Activity

"Collaborative Story Time" is a communal story-telling activity in which students practice using Freytag's Pyramid plot structure in their own narrative writing. In this activity, each student begins a story inspired by a unique evocative photograph. They are prompted to write the exposition of the tale by introducing the setting and main characters. After the allotted amount of time, the story is then passed to another student who is prompted to write the inciting incident or conflict and begin to detail the rising action. The paper is passed from student to student twice more until the story is resolved. When the stories are finished, the worksheet is returned to the original student who can then make edits and is responsible for producing a final draft.

⭐Poe's Annabel Lee Poetry/Song Pairing

Who in the world knows more about love and loss than Edgar Allan Poe? This resource features a full-length lesson plan and accompanying materials for a song/poem pairing of "Annabel Lee" by Edgar Allan Poe and popular song, "Sad Beautiful Tragic." 4. Vocabulary Terms- 8 vocabulary terms and definitions related to this project: Women’s Rights, passion, activist, suffrage, Nobel Prize, achievement, triumphant, inspire.

5. Vocabulary Quiz- This 8 question vocabulary quiz (format: Google Survey) is taken right from the vocabulary terms document.

6. Research Graphic Organizer - Graphic organizer for students to record their individual women heroes research. Includes an example!

7. Student Checklist and Project Reflection- This is this the final part of this research project. Students are asked (format: Google Survey) to fill out a checklist marking if they completed all aspects of the research project. They then reflect on what they did well on, what they can improve on, what they learned, and if they enjoyed the research project.
