High School Women's History Month Resources

Make learning about several modern international  women interesting with this no-prep digital escape game.  The game includes access to a website where your students will hunt for the keys to unlock a set of locks.  Students will need to read the clues very carefully and watch videos, visit websites, and read texts to find the information they need to win the game.  Very easy to use - just send your students to the website and let them work!  Students can play individually or in teams.

Digital escape games are a fun way to start a unit, or to review at the end of a unit.  They can also be used to learn about a cultural or historical event.  This game will have your students reading carefully and paying attention to the smallest details in order to complete the challenge and unlock the locks.

Prep is very easy - you just need to share the website URL with your students.  You may want to test the site before you use it, just to make sure nothing is blocked by your district.  As some of the clues can be challenging to unlock, you may choose to help your students with the trickier ones.  With the teacher guide, you will have the answer key - so you can help guide students towards the correct answer by giving them hints, or if you have limited time, you can adjust the game by reducing the number of locks they need to unlock - just give them the answer(s) to help the activity fit your time constraints.

Primary Source Analysis and DBQ's

This 25-page Primary Source Analysis with DBQ's resource with 22 primary sources plus three DBQ prompts gives students a chance to delve deeper into the challenges and obstacles and to evaluate women's roles and the relative success of reform movements during this era. The first two pages includes an Overview, Notes on Primary Sources and Teaching Notes.

Here’s a chance for students to read documents that shed light on various reform movements and to consider both the strategies employed by women who participated in these movements and the power of the groups that focused on various issues of the time such as working conditions, women's health, temperance and suffrage to name a few.

Assign just one, a few or all of the sources depending on time constraints and student interest.

Primary sources include letters, photos, reports, newspaper articles and other documents. Each page of primary sources includes comprehension questions at the end in order for students to analyze perspectives, consider key ideas and identify bias.

Included is a one-page sheet that explains what primary sources are and how to analyze them using specific questions through a process called HAPPY. There is also a page at the end for students to apply the HAPPY process to one source.

Three DBQ prompts are included at the end with instructions on how to create a response to the prompt.

An Answer Key to all the questions and the DBQ prompts are available at the end of the packet.

A separate PowerPoint presentation on How to Integrate Sources for a DBQ is included in the Zip file. There is also a YouTube video that provides narration for the slides.

Reading Assignment

This 5-page Reading Assignment and Worksheet provides an overview of the various activities, attributes and activities of women involved in various reform movements. It covers the time period from the the turn of the century, around 1900, through 1920. Students can read this on their own as a homework assignment or it can be a group activity in a classroom. As a close reading activity, it is also ideally suited for home-schoolers or independent learners who want to learn more. A Worksheet with comprehension questions based on the reading is included, along with an Answer Key. This resource helps students with close reading and critical thinking.

This 16-slide PowerPoint presentation covers women's contributions and experiences during the Progressive Era. It is an ideal lesson as a supplement to United States History or as a stand-alone resource for women’s history. It is also a good resource during Women’s History Month.

This Figurative Language Short Passage Set about Rosa Parks is a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. Use it during Women's History Month or any time of the year! Featuring Rosa Parks, this is a 216-word passage filled with 15 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! This figurative language passage set is rigorous, uses higher-level words and phrases, and in addition to merely identifying the different types, students will be asked to discuss the impact it has on the reader, as they’re asked to do on standardized testing. Students can complete all three worksheets as part of a packet, but I suggest using one each day. If you teach allusion, alliteration, idiom, or onomatopoeia, you can ask students to include those in Task 2 where they will be asked to continue the passage using a similar writing style. I have left some blanks on the checklist for this very purpose.

Reflection:
The class can review the answers and comments as a whole group when the activity is complete. You’ll be surprised how much better they’ll get at figurative language after being exposed to some high-quality examples!

Directions: Students will plot the letters in the coordinate plane. The letters should be written above each point. Then, they will read the message from left to right. Finally, they'll write the message in the given space.

A coordinate grid is included with this activity. Only the first quadrant is used therefore it can be used for beginners.

With this resource, you can challenge your class to test their understanding of coordinates to find the hidden message in a fun and meaningful way. So it's a great way of testing their skills.

Prep is very easy - you just need to share the website URL with your students.  You may want to test the site before you use it, just to make sure nothing is blocked by your district.  As some of the clues can be challenging to unlock, you may choose to help your students with the trickier ones.  With the teacher guide, you will have the answer key - so you can help guide students towards the correct answer by giving them hints, or if you have limited time, you can adjust the game by reducing the number of locks they need to unlock - just give them the answer(s) to help the activity fit your time constraints.
