Beyond the primary grades teachers often seem to forget about checking students reading fluency. This is a simple to use form for students to provide themselves a self-feedback on their read aloud fluency. Teachers can then use the same form to provide their own feedback on the students reading fluency. File states to use Audacity (a free download online) but other recording programs/devices may be used - this is just a personal choice/what is available on our school computers. This FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE STATIONS activity is a fun and effective method for giving students practice at analyzing the most important types of figurative language. Students will develop the skills not only to identify types of figurative language but also to explain how figurative language contributes to the meaning of a literary text!

Students will learn about figurative language while gaining exposure to the most profound and thought-provoking quotations from the world's greatest writers! Each worksheet challenges students to explain the meaning or effect created by the same figure of speech found across 6 quotations. • Answer Keys to Stations Worksheets (x8): The answer keys explain how the figures of speech found across 48 quotations contribute to the meaning of the quotation. (8 pages)

• Literary Devices Glossary: This 1-page glossary features the 8 types of figurative language that are used most frequently in literature. • Quiz: Metaphors & Similes: This quiz focuses only on metaphors and similes; it challenges students to identify the figures of speech used across 15 famous quotations. Answer key included. (2 pages)

• Quiz: All Types of Figurative Language (x2): These two quizzes focus on all 8 types of figurative language. The first quiz challenges students to identity the figures of speech used across 25 quotations. The second quiz is similar but features 20 longer quotations; it could be used as a make-up quiz or extra-credit quiz. Answer keys included. (8 pages)

• Quiz: Figurative Language in Music: This quiz focuses on the types of figurative language used in 10 famous song lyrics by musicians such as The Beatles, Paul Simon, Elton John, John Legend, Beyoncé, and Taylor Swift. Answer key included. (2 pages)

This 16-page resource will provide you with 4 separate texts, each about a dangerous winter sport :

• Bobsleigh,
• Aerial-Freestyle Skiing,
• Skeleton Luge and
• Snowboarding.

Each text is two full pages and each is accompanied by 4 in-depth questions as well as an answer key.

These texts can be used to model reading or writing skills, for informative and descriptive writing, or to use during a guided reading or shared reading with your students. They could be used as an assessment of comprehension. They could easily be assigned to a substitute teacher. I love using these readings around Canada Games, Winter Games or Olympics.

As with all of my documents, I cater to a strictly middle-school crowd, and you'll not find frilly, kiddish or immature content (vocabulary, fonts, structure or images). These would be suitable for your students in grades 5-7 (even 4th or 8th), depending on needs and interests.

This product is in the form of a Google Doc, so it's perfect for uploading right to Google Classroom for Distance OR in-person learning! After you purchase, you'll see a word doc that contains the link to the Google Doc. Make a copy and you're good to go!

This paired text analysis requires students to first read and analyze the allegory "The Terrible Things". There are questions that ask about author's purpose, symbolism, and comprehension. Next, students will read, annotate, and analyze the poem "First They Came for the Jews". Finally, they will answer a synthesis question in paragraph form while referring to the included rubric. The two text have many similarities for the students to comment on and include in their response. This is a great way to introduce The Holocaust, and can be used with texts such as The Diary of Anne Frank, Daniel's Story, The Devil's Arithmetic, Number the Stars, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Night, etc.
