Moses Sends 12 Spies to Canaan, God's Promised Land Sunday School, Numbers 13-14

By Cheryl Bennett

Moses sends spies to Canaan before taking the Israelites in to take over. This resource gives you everything you need to teach the story and help preschoolers and kindergarten students to remember.

This lesson includes:

  1. Title page
  2. Story pages of Numbers 13-14
  3. Memory game in color
  4. Memory game in black and white
  5. Order the Events activity (color, cut, and glue)
  6. Coloring page
  7. Printing instructions to create story cards for students to take home
  8. Printing instructions for everything included.

This lesson took me an hour to teach.

1. How to prep:

I printed and laminated the story pages the evening before. I also printed and laminated the memory game and the Order the Events activity sheets the evening before.

I also made sure I had enough glue sticks and scissors.

2. I read the story pages. Students can color while I read to help them focus.

3. I showed the story cards (just smaller versions of the slides that students take home) to students and asked them to repeat as much of the story back to me as they can.

4. Students color the Order the Events activity.

5. They cut out each box. I have found it's helpful to cut this part of the paper off completely before they have to cut. It's easier for little ones who are just learning to cut. There is a line across the page to show where to cut.

5. Since they are not reading yet, I read the boxes and they show me which picture goes in the box.

The lesson focuses on the Israelites complaining, Moses striking the rock in disobedience to God, the snakes that bite them and God's salvation from the punishment He sends.

This lesson includes:

  1. Title Page - Color
  2. The story of Numbers 20-21 Color
  3. Title Page - Black and White
  4. The story of Numbers 20-21 Black and White
  5. Order the events - Activity (color, cut, and glue)
  6. Color Version - Dice Activity
  7. Black and White Version - Dice Activity
  8. Coloring pages
  9. Printing instructions to create story cards for students to take home
  10. Printing instructions for everything included.

This lesson takes me an hour to teach.

1. How to prep:

I printed and laminated the story pages the evening before. I also printed the coloring page and the Order the Events activity sheets the evening before.

Finally, I made sure I had enough glue sticks and scissors.

6. They glue the picture in the box.

7. I finish with the dice activity. Students roll the dice. When the dice lands, students look at the picture on top. I ask, "What is that picture? When did that come up in the story?"

Why should I choose this resource?

1. The story comes from Scripture but is summarized for young learners. The Word of God is not compromised in the process.

2. There are a variety of coloring pages for students to do during the lesson to help them listen to the story but still busy with a non-linguistic activity so their brains do not have competition between the 2 activities.

3. There are plenty of activities to keep them engaged. (Note: Our church has a worship leader that comes in to teach songs for a few minutes so that is scheduled into our time.)

4. Easy to understand directions throughout the slide when in edit mode.

5. Colorful and engaging pictures to help tell the story for pre-readers or early readers.

6. A chance to work with the story while practicing coloring, cutting, and gluing.

Statement of Faith:

I believe that the Bible is the inspired, infallible Word of God. I believe that Jesus is fully God and fully human, born of a virgin, lived a sinless life and paid the penalty for our sins through his death on the cross, resurrected on the third day having victory over death. I believe in the trinity, that God is existent in 3 separate persons - God the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit. I believe, as Calvary Chapel states, “that all people are by nature separated from God and responsible for their own sin, but that salvation, redemption, and forgiveness are freely offered to all by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. When a person repents of sin and accepts Jesus Christ as personal Savior and Lord, trusting Him to save, that person is immediately born again and sealed by the Holy Spirit, all his/her sins are forgiven, and that person becomes a child of God, destined to spend eternity with the Lord.”
