Fruits of the Spirit Pack #5 | Bible Sacred Classical Music Listening Activities

By Agee and Row Classical Music Appreciation

Classical music, with its emotional depth and grandeur, resonates with the human spirit in ways words often struggle to. As students listen to sacred classical music carefully chosen for their thematic connection to Christian concepts, they can forge deeper personal connections to their Bible-based beliefs.

The beauty and complexity of sacred classical music invite students to slow down, reflect on the lyrics and themes, and contemplate the deeper meaning of their faith. This introspective music appreciation can lead to new insights and a more nuanced understanding. Great for homeschoolers, Sunday school, and faith-based teaching applications!

Featured Sacred Music

  1. Mass No. 2 in E Minor, Anton Bruckner
  2. La Mort D'Adam, Jean-François Le Suer
  3. Du Soltt Gott, Deinen Herren, Lieben, Johann Sebastian Bach
  4. Ruht Wohl, Ihr Heiligen Gebeine, Johann Sebastian Bach
  5. Zadok the Priest, George Handel
  6. Stabat Mater, Giovanni Pergolesi
  7. Christ on the Mount of Olives, Ludwig Van Beethoven
  8. L'enfance du Christ, Hector Berlioz
  9. Lo, Christ the Lord is Born, Elgar
  10. Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, Rachmaninoff

Listening to music associated with creation, redemption, hope, or sacrifice can bring these stories to life in a powerful way, fostering a deeper understanding and emotional connection to Christianity.

Concepts and Themes

Performance Type - hymn, gospel, praise, chorus, choir, classical, opera, worship, modern

Draw a Scene Box - there is generous space for students to draw a scene inspired by the music, doodle, and be creative and expressive while listening to the selected music. There is also artwork to color!

Fruits of the Spirit - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control

Emotions - reverent, inspired, uplifted, peaceful, thankful, happy, calm, sad, joyful, excited

Life - love, kindness, forgiveness, service, gratitude, honesty

Faith - scripture, prayer, hope, belief, truth, guidance

Style - majestic, serene, soaring, harmonious, melodic, orchestral

Instruments - drum, cymbals, organ, cello, trumpet, horn, viola, violin, harp, flute, oboe, lute, piano, bass

Reflection Writing Box - students can write their own keywords, further describe their listening experience, and journal any thoughts and feelings.

Journey through the "Fruits of the Spirit" and "Emotions," tracing their echoes in the music and finding parallels in their own lives. Be it the unwavering "love" in a choir's harmonization or the calming "peace" evoked by a serene solo flute, students connect the music to their Christian faith and inner world.

Sacred classical music allows students to reflect on the fundamental values of "Life" and "Faith," pondering how they manifest in the stories told through music and scripture. Throughout this musical experience, listeners explore the diverse voices of various instruments, from the soaring trumpet to the gentle harp. Each sound plays a role in the tapestry of music, just like each individual has a unique contribution.

Students use the "Reflection Writing Box" to capture their thoughts and feelings. There is plenty of space to write down keywords that resonated with them, describe their unique listening experiences, and journal any questions or insights that emerged. This is their space to process, connect, and express any concepts the music awakened.

Student Benefits

  • increased knowledge of popular composers
  • familiarity with a variety of musical periods
  • ability to recognize, and engage with, popular pieces of music
  • identify different instrument sounds
  • social-emotional exploration of feelings and moods within the music
  • creative expression by drawing and choosing colors related to a musical theme

By incorporating sacred classical music activities, students explore more than just melodies and harmonies; but also a bridge to inner exploration, fostering empathy, reflection, and a deeper appreciation for the Christian faith. These listening activities are great tools for lifelong learning, self-awareness, and connection!

Christmas Nativity Follow the Star Game

By The Treasured Schoolhouse

This is a complete game that could be used for the Christmas nativity or for Epiphany. It can either be used as a fun game or educational tool for Jesus’ birth. There are 2 versions of the game to get the gifts to baby Jesus using the same game board!

The game includes....

• Game Board – 2 pages

• Directions (1 for each version)

• Star Cards (educational or fun)

• Blank Cards (editable)

• Optional Card Backs

• Die, Player Tokens (3), and a Tab Label

There are 2 versions of the game. One is for “fun” and the other is educational to be used as a review or supplemental material on the birth of Jesus. In the first version, the Star Cards have fun actions (move ahead, skip a turn, etc) depending on the card drawn. On the educational Star Cards, there are questions related to Luke 1-2 and Matthew 1-2. In addition to questions, there are true or false and fill in the blank. The object of both versions is to be the first player/team to get your gift to the manger!

The blank cards are editable so that you can add your own actions or questions. Optional card backs are also included. The game can be printed and mounted in a file folder or printed on card stock and laminated. If mounted in a file folder, there is a tab label included and the directions could be mounted on the front of the file folder or laminated separately.

Also included are 3 player tokens (the gifts of the magi) and a die numbered with 1-5 and a star. If desired, you could use your own, but these are designed for the game.

NOTE: The questions on the Star Cards are from the RSVBCE, so they are aimed toward Catholic use, but could be adapted for any religion.

UPDATE: (12/16/2020) This has been updated to the Revised Standard Version: Catholic Edition (RSVBCE), so they go along with the other nativity activities and uniform with other items at The Treasured Schoolhouse. This update can not be seen in the preview, but is shown in one of the thumbnails.
