This reading passage is about Ruby, a high school senior dealing with insecurity and negative body image. Fearing that her best friend Kaya might leave her for more popular, thinner girls, Ruby drastically changes her appearance in an attempt to fit in. In the end, Ruby begins to understand that her insecurities about her body shouldn’t define her, and that being herself is far more important than trying to fit society's idea of what is beautiful.

Reading Passage Overview - "More Than Muscles: Strength On My Own Terms"
This is a story about a high school boy named Ross, who struggles with body image and peer pressure as his friends mock him for working out at home instead of going to the gym. Ross feels insecure about not being able to afford a gym membership and worries that he won’t measure up to their fitness standards. Their teasing about his body and workout routine intensifies his feelings of inadequacy. However, Ross eventually stands up for himself, realizing that fitness is personal and that it’s more important to focus on what makes him feel good, rather than conforming to others’ expectations of how his body should look. In the end, Ross takes pride in his own journey and choices, finding confidence in staying true to himself.
