Make learning about Cinco de Mayo interesting with this no-prep digital escape game.  The game includes access to a website where your students will hunt for the keys to unlock a set of locks.  Students will need to read the clues very carefully and watch videos, visit websites, and read texts to find the information they need to win the game.  Very easy to use - just send your students to the website and let them work!  Students can play individually or in teams. 

Cinco de Mayo is almost here!  Your friend from Puebla has sent you some candies from Mexico, but in order to open the box and retrieve them, you will have to figure out the codes that open the locks by learning about Cinco de Mayo and the traditions surrounding it.  This is a challenging activity that students will need to work together and think critically in order to complete. Some readings are in English while others are in Spanish.

Digital escape games are a fun way to start a unit, or to review at the end of a unit.  They can also be used to learn about a cultural or historical event.  This game will have your students reading carefully and paying attention to the smallest details in order to complete the challenge and unlock the locks.

Prep is very easy - you just need to share the website URL with your students.  You may want to test the site before you use it, just to make sure nothing is blocked by your district.  As some of the clues can be challenging to unlock, you may choose to help your students with the trickier ones.  With the teacher guide, you will have the answer key - so you can help guide students towards the correct answer by giving them hints, or if you have limited time, you can adjust the game by reducing the number of locks they need to unlock - just give them the answer(s) to help the activity fit your time constraints.

Are you a CI teacher that struggles with whether to teach tú and usted first? I like to pick one and stick with it for a time to avoid confusion. However, I have discovered a way to teach both simultaneously with a clear visual cue. A CRAFTIVITY, if you will. All you need in the classroom are

1. copies of the crown (this resource)
2. royalty tax (this resource)
3. scissors,
4. glue/tape/staples,
5. maybe some markers or colored pencils.

How does it work?

• On day one, or early in the year, give students their crown. It's great for early in the year when there isn't much vocabulary accumulated to work with. Tell them to decorate their crown however they want. They can make it personal.
• After this, they cut them out and glue/tape/staple the bands on the ends of the crown only. They should not connect the strips to make the band. I recommend keeping them flat for easy storage until they are Royalty for the Day.
• Have students cut out their own royalty coins for royalty tax. You can decide on the number. I start with one per citizen. Royalty does not need a coin. Also, some of the coins are square because they are so much easier to cut out!!
• When it's their day to be royal, pull out their crown, have them connect the band so they can wear it on their head. During class, students must refer to royalty with the usted form and the rest of the class refers to each other in the tú form. Let them pick what day they want. Some will pick their birthdays while other families do not celebrate birthdays.
• The sentence Usted es real is on the crown as a reminder.
• Remember that some students may need help understanding that using a formal form is very important to another culture!

What if someone forgets to use the usted form with royalty? They have to pay a royalty tax! This is included in the resource. The student who has still kept their royalty coin(s) because they remembered to use the usted form can get a prize or just bragging rights! You can even have the class interview the student about things they like, dislike, etc. so everyone can learn about their king, queen, or whatever royal title they prefer.

Accommodation: Some students don't like being the center of attention for the entire class. In this case, you can group students together. Three in a group is a good number but use whatever works for you. Each group has one royal student. The others in the group have to use the usted form with that student and the royal student uses the tú form with everyone else (except maybe the teacher).You can even rotate groups so several students get the chance to talk to each royal member. Of course, the member of royalty stays on their "throne" while others come to see them.

You can use this for whatever level you choose. While I like the idea of starting with level one, you could wait. Furthermore, you can use this activity every year you teach, no matter the level. Even though students may be comfortable with tú and usted before level one is over, letting someone have a special day is good. They will have the opportunity to practice both pronouns and their conjugations with new verbs and new tenses or moods.

Students will feel special and you will see them grow in their language and confidence. So little for us to invest with such a great return on investment!

Engage your students with this 2 pages worksheet, focused on the renowned Spanish festival, La Tomatina. Designed for secondary Spanish students, this resource includes a reading comprehension passage about Nico’s unforgettable experience at the Tomatina festival. Here’s what it includes:

• Reading comprehension: Students answer questions in Spanish based on Nico’s story, building skills in understanding authentic-style texts.

• Grammar practice: A focused section on the pluperfect tense (pretérito pluscuamperfecto) helps students understand the tense and gain confidence in using this advanced tense to describe actions that happened prior to other past events.

• Vocabulary and Writing practice: Key vocabulary and phrases from the text are reinforced with translation exercises, promoting retention of useful language structures related to festivals and personal experiences.

The final writing task encourages students to write about their own hypothetical festival experience, using a mix of the pluperfect and preterite tenses, opinions, and connectors. This task is an excellent way to prepare students for the writing paper of the exam while allowing them to explore cultural themes.

This worksheet can support lessons on cultural topics, serve as effective exam prep, or offer meaningful cover work for independent study.

The Global Challenges unit of AP Spanish® has many interesting contexts, including the environment. This digital and printable article talks about the effects of global warming all around the world. Students can complete this via a Google Doc or by doing the auto-graded goformative version. Students who prefer paper copies can have a print-out! Save time searching the net to find a good article, and save more time by letting goformative grade this for you! Another benefit to the goformative version is that students can see the article side by side with the questions, and the questions are embedded just where they can find the answer! It's a great scaffold for students still developing their reading comprehension skills!
