This set of 3 St. Patrick’s Day Reading Comprehension Passages|Leprechauns with Multiple Choice Questions is about the history, culture, and myths of Ireland’s most celebrated holiday.

This resource is ideal for students in grades 2, 3, 4, and 5 to learn about St. Patrick’s Day.

The passages include:

• The Legend of St. Patrick This passage tells the story of how St. Patrick became the patron saint of Ireland, and how he used the shamrock to teach people about Christianity.
• Traditions of St. Patrick’s Day This passage explains the origin and meaning of some of the common symbols and customs of St. Patrick’s Day, such as wearing green, eating corned beef and cabbage, and parading in the streets.
• The Folklore of Leprechauns This passage describes the characteristics and behavior of leprechauns, the mischievous fairies who guard pots of gold at the end of rainbows.

Each passage is followed by 10 multiple-choice questions that test the student’s understanding of the passage. Answer keys are also included.

This resource can be used as a whole-class activity, a small group discussion, or an independent assignment.

Directions: Use these sheets to help students practice subitizing and array identification of objects. Subitizing is the ability to instantly and accurately recognize groups of objects between one and three items. Array identification refers to the mental counting of objects and can be assessed with arrays containing four to seven objects. These sheets should be flashed in front of a student for less than 1 second, and the student should be able to recognize the amount of objects.
