Using these classic books, teach your students about quarter rest! Sing/chant/play along with the rhymes I wrote for the books and add in rhythm sticks for fun! Then use the beat charts and worksheets to reinforce decoding skills as well as teach students to listen and recognize rests as well as practice writing them. "Bear's New Friend" and "Bear Feels Scared" also have recorder and barred instrument parts that would be fun for the older grades. "Bear Can't Sleep" has an ostinato part as well. Looking for a way to incorporate the Little Blue Truck books into your music classroom or jazz up your reading time of the Little Blue Truck series? These songs written for the Little Blue Truck books summarize what happens in the book while using the almost the same exact melody. Once your students have learned the first melody for Little Blue Truck, the melody stays mostly the same but the lyrics change with each different Little Blue Truck book that you own. Use the chant to "Freeda the Cheetah" to explore movement and play along with rhythm sticks. Follow up with a lesson on rhyming words. The chant for "One Lonely Fish" is perfect for keeping a steady beat and making this book more engaging for your little ones. Use the chant in "Pokko and the Drum" to play along with Pokko the frog on her adventures. "The Very Quiet Cricket" is great for teaching whisper voice. Using the books "'Slowly, Slowly, Slowly' said the Sloth" by Eric Carle and "Freeda the Cheetah" by JTK Belle, explore fast vs. slow tempo. Using the song "Slowly, Slowly, Slowly" have the students move like a sloth to the music. Explore various ways a sloth would move. Ask which animals move quickly and introduce "Freeda the Cheetah" and have them run and drop when the chant says to do so. Additional rhyming and tempo worksheets reinforce the tempo and rhyming words. Can be used and adapted for multiple grade levels.

Need a slow tempo lesson using a book? Used up the more popular books? Try this lesson set to the book "Slow Samson" by Bethany Christou. Every time that you read "Samson was slow", have the children sing the song or chant the rhyme that goes with the lesson. Feel free to have students move slowly to the song as well. This lesson combines both books to demonstrate loud and soft sounds. Begin by talking about various sounds that can be made and then introduce "Quiet as a Mouse". Have the students quietly chant along as the mouse grows more frustrated that no one will play with it. Then go on to "Suki The Very Loud Bunny" to demonstrate loud sounds. Have the children move and play along with the chant. Use the rhythm and beat chart for the first book to explain rhythm vs. steady beat, as well as show that rests get a beat as well. Use the worksheet attached as a paper or digital activity through Easel. Also great to decode chants for rhythm syllables. Adaptable for grades PreK-2nd grade.
