Recognizing the Founding Fathers by their actions:

This activity helps students recognize the Founding Fathers a their actions leading up to the Revolutionary War. The teacher will display (via Google Slides) or read (via printed script) clues describing the Founding Fathers and their actions. Students will be given a score sheet to enter their choices of which Founding Father is being described. They will earn points based on how few clues they require to reach the correct answer.

Ten Founding Fathers are described in this activity: John Adams, William Dawes, Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock, Thomas Jefferson, Robert R. Livingston, Thomas Paine, Paul Revere, Roger Sherman, and George Washington.

Aligns with Indiana Social Studies Standard: 5.H.11.

A Jesse Owens Escape Room activity. Ideal for fifth grade or sixth grade, the activity is perfect for group work; starting a new topic on the Olympics, World War II or Black History; team-building activities; or for a fun, engaging and interactive lesson. In Task 1 students will read an informational text about Jesse Owens and then find their way through a maze by answering true or false comprehension questions. If they answer the questions correctly they will reveal their first word.

In Task 2 students will use the same informational text to complete a crossword puzzle. Within the puzzle there are several hidden letters which will need to be unscrambled on the completion of the puzzle to reveal the second word.

In Task 3 students will have to cut out 27 timeline task cards about important historical events from the 1900s before putting them in order from the earliest date to the most recent. When they have finished their task they can glue them onto the answer key which will reveal their third word.

In Task 4 students will have to find the missing words in a wordsearch puzzle before finding a hidden word from the letters that are left over in the puzzle. This hidden word is their fourth and final word.

Students can then complete their student answer key with the four words they revealed before checking with the teacher to see if they have escaped successfully.

Exploring Maps Activity Packet is a great compliment to your Me On the Map unit. My students love working on these activities. When student groups are engaged in the activities, I take a step back, watch, listen, and work one to one with students. It is great to have the students engaged in “teaching” their friends. This packet contains four different activities: - a board game - a bingo game - I Have, Who Has activity (works best when teacher led) - a “swat” activity I introduce the activities one at a time.
