These three pre-reading activities are the perfect introduction to the literature unit for The Scarlet Letter by Nathanial Hawthorne. The activities are anticipatory and get students in the mindset of Puritan and Colonial New England life, put in the shoes of the community members of those times, learn some initial vocabulary, and have the opportunity to tie this all together by writing what they think the novel is about based on these pre-reading activities.

How should I use these activities in the classroom?

And if you have a class full of students who are completely unfamiliar with the plot of The Scarlet Letter, I suggest completing the slideshow first, the Secret Sinner game second, and the worksheet third (or send it home as homework).

Introducing Consonant -le Bingo – an engaging activity for students to practice decoding words with consonant -le endings! This game is designed to help students develop their skills decoding words with that end with -dle, -ble, -gle, ple, and -ckle!

Each of the 30 unique Bingo cards contains 24 randomly selected words with either consonant -le endings. Calling cards are also included. The 24 words are chosen from a list of 60 words, so each Bingo card has a unique combination. Bingos should be frequent but not every word appears on every card.

Students will blend the words multiple times throughout the game facilitating orthographic mapping!

3. Look at the picture, say what it is and think about what letters spell the initial, medial and final sounds.

4. Walk around the room searching for the Beginning Sound located in the oval in the top right of another card that matches the picture

5. When found, write the Beginning Sound on the line in the first box.

6. Following the arrow on their paper to box 2, write the number of this card in the box on the top left.

7. Repeat until all boxes are full. Students should return to starting card when completed.

Directions

Rolling the Die:

• Students roll a six-sided die to determine which sight word they will read.
• Students can also scan the QR code on the worksheet using a device with a QR code scanner to access a virtual dice roller.

Reading the Sight Word:

• Students match the number rolled with the corresponding sight word on their worksheet.
• Students read the sight word out loud.
• Students should focus on pronouncing each word correctly and quickly.

Marking Progress:

• Once students read a sight word, they should highlight or color the box. They could also cover it with a counter or place marker etc.
• If students roll a number they have already completed, they should roll again until they land on a new sight word.
• Students continue rolling and reading until they have completed all the sight words on their worksheets.

This Match-Select-Name writing unit contains fluency support activities directly linked to the Match-Select-Name basketball reading unit. The Match-Select-Name method was presented by L. Oelwein. There has been a significant amount of research done on the efficacy of this method.
