This is perfect for independent practice or centers, whether you're teaching in small groups or as a whole class. This is #4 in the Scavenger Hunt Series. It is perfect for kindergarten, first grade, early second grade or any student working on initial sounds. Start with whole-group instruction to guide your students through the process of identifying the picture, matching them to words, and writing their answers. Once they master the format, this scavenger hunt becomes an independent literacy station that can be used again and again with different content!

Take a at my preview for a better peek at what is included. Here is the letters bundle ,the CVC Word Hunt and the VCe Word Hunt  if you’d like ALL.THE.THINGS. in this series.

Contents:

  • Teacher Directions

  • Student Directions and Recording Sheet

  • Teacher Answer Key

  • 15 Picture/Initial Sound Matching Cards

  • Recording sheet for assessment or progress monitoring

  • Built-in movement and fine motor practice

Perfect for:

  • Whole group instruction

  • Independent literacy centers

  • Scavenger hunts for phonics practice

  • Multi-sensory learning that combines movement, visual identification, and writing

Common Core Alignment:

✏️CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.K.2.D: I can isolate and pronounce the initial sound in a word.

✏️CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.1.2.C: I can isolate and pronounce the initial sound in a word.

How it Works:

  1. Students may start at ANY card with their pencil and paper on a clipboard. If this is too much to carry: Adjust the activity, by “hiding” the cards around the classroom writing surfaces such as tables and desks and have a pencil at each station.

  2. Write the number of the starting card in the top left square.

  3. Look at the picture, say what it is and think about the initial (beginning) sounds.

  4. Walk around the room searching for that letter located in the oval in the top right of another card that matches the picture

  5. When found, write the Beginning Sound on the line in the first box.

  6. Following the arrow on their paper to box 2, write the number of this card in the box on the top left.

  7. Repeat until all boxes are full. Students should return to starting card when completed.

You will❤️ it because:

Teachers will love how easy this scavenger hunt is to set up and how versatile it is—use it for independent practice, centers, or whole group activities. It’s aligned with a trusted phonics curriculum and provides a great way to assess students’ understanding. Plus, the built-in movement keeps students engaged and focused, making phonics practice more fun!

Students will love the excitement of searching for the right answers while moving around the room. The matching activity encourages them to think critically about phonics and fine-tune their motor skills, making learning feel like a game.

Who is this for?

  • Kindergarten through 2nd-grade teachers looking for engaging phonics activities.

  • Teachers seeking a UFLI-aligned, not endorsed by-simply introduced in the same sequence- resource to support phonics instruction.

  • Educators needing fun, low-prep activities for independent centers or small groups.

Functional Literacy Sight Word Writing & coloring for Special Education & K - 2

By Exceptional Education CA

This Match-Select-Name writing unit contains fluency support activities directly linked to the Match-Select-Name basketball reading unit. The Match-Select-Name method was presented by L. Oelwein. There has been a significant amount of research done on the efficacy of this method. It is shown to be beneficial for students with exceptionalities including Down’s Syndrome and Autism Spectrum Disorder who are struggling to learn to read using phonics.

There are four stages in the method:

1 - Acquisition (Matching, Selecting, Naming)

2 - Fluency (Practice and Review)

3 - Transfer (Use of new fonts and coloured paper)

4 - Generalization (Ability to read the words in any context/format)

Literacy Skill Development for Students with Special Learning Needs, p. 51. Broun, L.

The resources included in this unit support the fluency stage for the 24 words in the set. The sight words in this set are from the Pre-primer and Primer Dolch word lists. You will find a writing sheet for each word, a colouring sheet for each word, and a board game using all 24 words.

  3. Look at the picture, say what it is and think about what letters spell the initial, medial and final sounds.

  4. Walk around the room searching for the Beginning Sound located in the oval in the top right of another card that matches the picture
