Chichen Itza Escape Room Activity

By Creative Primary Literacy

A Chichen Itza Escape Room activity. Ideal for fifth grade or sixth grade, the activity is perfect for group work, starting a new Maya Empire history topic, team-building activities or for a fun, engaging and interactive lesson. The activity can be used in English class as it incorporates some ELA skills or in Social Studies.

The activity has been split into four different tasks; your students will need to complete each of the tasks to reveal a word. Together the four words make a phrase for them to escape the room.

Included in this resource: Student guidelines for completing the tasks meaning no teacher prep A student answer key to complete as they work through the tasks An informational text or reading comprehension passage A true or false fact sheet & maze A crossword puzzle A timeline activity & answer key A wordsearch puzzle Teacher answer sheets for each task

⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻

In Task 1 students will read an informational text about Chichen Itza and then find their way through a maze by answering true or false comprehension questions. If they answer the questions correctly they will reveal their first word.

In Task 2 students will use the same informational text to complete a crossword puzzle. Within the puzzle there are several hidden letters which will need to be unscrambled on the completion of the puzzle to reveal the second word.

In Task 3 students will have to cut out 27 timeline task cards before putting them in order from the earliest date to the most recent. When they have finished their task they can glue them onto the answer key which will reveal their third word.

In Task 4 students will have to find the missing words in a wordsearch puzzle before finding a hidden word from the letters that are left over in the puzzle. This hidden word is their fourth and final word.

Students can then complete their student answer key with the four words they revealed before checking with the teacher to see if they have escaped successfully.

Inca, Maya & Aztec Scavenger Hunt (No Prep!)

By Miss Yous Clues and Resources

This is a scavenger hunt using task cards that is based on the Inca, Mayan & Aztec civilizations which is studied in the 5th grade curriculum under the following standards:

  • 5.1 The first humans in the Western Hemisphere modified their physical environment as well as adapted to their environment. Their interactions with their environment led to various innovations and to the development of unique cultures.
  • 5.1a Various forms of scientific evidence suggest that humans came to North America approximately 25,000 to 14,000 years ago and spread southward to South America.
  • 5.1b Human populations that settled along rivers, in rainforests, along oceans, in deserts, on plains, in mountains, and in cold climates adapted to and made use of the resources and environment around them in developing distinct ways of life.
  • 5.1c Early peoples living together in settlements developed shared cultures with customs, beliefs, values, and languages that give identity to the group. These early peoples also developed patterns of organization and governance to manage their societies.

This resource begins by challenging students with a mission, complete the tasks to solve the mystery word and four digit code to collect ancient treasures lost in these civilizations. Check out the preview to see what each task card entails. Students will need to walk around the room reading the task cards. Each task card has a code word on the bottom which is the answer to the question/fill in the blank. The answer will NOT be found on that same task card. For example, the answer to task card #1 is found by reading the passage on task card #8. Students MUST record which task card they found the answer on in their answer sheet under the “FOUND CARDS #” column. That column will be used at the end for the 4 digit lock code. They will follow the clues to find the correct 4 digit code. Once they have completed the scavenger hunt they will receive a half sheet of paper stating that they have found and collected the treasures!

This activity would be a great review before assessments, as a center activity, a group activity, etc. Students will be engaged with the learning while having a fun time trying to solve all of the clues!

The 12 Gods of Greek Mythology

By Bright Classroom Ideas Marketplace

Greek mythology was a way of explaining the environment in which people lived, the natural phenomena they observed and the passage of time with days, months and seasons. Greek myths were also intricately connected to religion. They explained the origin and life of the gods, the origin of humans and their fate after death. Myths gave flesh and blood to the gods of Greek religion, while advising people on how to live a happy life. Another purpose of myths was to tell historical events so that people could keep in touch with their ancestors, the battles they fought and the places they explored.

In this book, you will find detailed information about each one of the gods: their character, their symbols, their role in the ancient Greek mythology, and their most famous stories. Your students can practice their knowledge of Greek mythology by doing the 20 multiple choice questions at the end of the book. The questions are followed by the relevant answer key.

Immerse yourself into the amazing world of Greek mythology and enjoy teaching it to your students!
