The Science Kids curriculum is intended to help teachers implement developmentally appropriate, hands-on science activities for children in Preschool, Kindergarten and the early grades. The activities in these packets are based on the scientific method and encourage inquiry-based learning. All activities can be differentiated to meet the needs of your students.

This packet includes enough lessons for 32 weeks of hands-on learning. While 32 weeks is a bit shorter than a typical school year, this curriculum is designed to be flexible in order to give children the time they need to learn, so extra days are allowed for each unit. Additional, optional activities are also included for many of the units, and these can be used to help fill your days if needed.

This curriculum supports the Next Generation Science Standards for kindergarten.

This package can be used in conjunction with the free iCell app (by Hudson Alpha), which is available for iPad and Android, as well as mobile devices. Note: the iPhone app is not as advanced as the iPad app as it only gives basic definitions of cell organelles. The app is a 3D interactive way for students to learn about plant and animal cells. You can move the cell around to see where the different cell organelles are located and click on the organelles to read basic, intermediate, or advanced, descriptions. I wish there were interactive programs like this when I had to learn about cells! This unit aligns with the Ontario Grade 8 Science curriculum. One way to use this package is have students use the app to explore the parts of an animal and a plant cell. After searching online for basic cell diagrams, I did not find any that looked similar to the app so I decided to draw a plant and animal cell in 3D to match the iCell app. The drawings match up to the cells used in the app. Students can look at the basic, intermediate, or advanced descriptions from the app and colour the cell using specific colours as identified in the handout. An additional set of questions is included to ensure students explore through each of the descriptions of the plant and animal cell. What is included in this package: -Animal Cell Worksheet – provides the cell organelles and a section to write out the descriptions from the iCell app -Animal Cell Organelle Identification and Colouring Activity -Animal Cell Organelle Identification Activity -Plant Cell Worksheet – provides the cell organelles and a section to write out the descriptions from the iCell app -Plant Cell Organelle Identification and Colouring Activity -Plant Cell Organelle Identification Activity -Additional Questions on Cells -Answer key for Animal Cell Worksheet, Plant Cell Worksheet, and Additional Questions -Plant and Animal Cell Quiz – label cell organelles, compare and contrast differences between plant and animal cells and organelle descriptions where the students have to name the organelle -Answer key to quiz also included I used this with my own grade 8 class and it takes a few days to complete all of the activities. We can eat all kinds of plants. This parts of a plant sort includes real photographic images to sort. This sort includes flowers, seeds, leaves, stems, roots, and fruits. There are six pictures for each plant part.

Pictures Included:

Flowers: broccoli, cauliflower, artichoke, squash blossom, dandelion, honeysuckle

Fruits: raspberry, apple, lime, pepper, banana, blueberry

Leaves: lettuce, kale, mint, purple cabbage, spinach, parsley

Roots: radish, sweet potato, parsnip, carrot, onion, garlic

Seeds: corn, almonds, beans, peas, sesame seeds, coconut

Stems: leek, asparagus, celery, rhubarb, scallions, bamboo shoots

This product includes two different types of sorting activities. One set has full page size sorting mats for students to organize each plant picture. The second set has header cards in two sizes (one large sized for table top activities and a smaller size that can fit inside a task box). The picture cards work with both sets of sorting activities.

Posters, Anchor Charts and Answer Keys

This set also includes a set of posters or anchor charts. These charts can be used to check the answers of the pictures sorted or as an instructional tool to teach about the plants we eat before students begin the sorting activity. These posters also allow teachers to differentiate this activity for students. Those who need more support can use these posters as a guide to filling out their sorting mats.

How to Use:

Students will place the sorting mats on a table or on the floor. They will look at each plant picture and place it on the correct mat.

Experiment 1: What happens when a seed gets wet?

Each experiment includes a detailed instruction sheet with materials lists and step by step directions for the experiment. There is a recording page for students to make predictions and record the results of the project. Also provided are journal pages for students to write why they think the results happened the way they did. Journal pages are differentiated where appropriate.

Plants We Eat Sort:

We can eat all kinds of plants. This parts of a plant sort includes real photographic images to sort. This sort includes flowers, seeds, leaves, stems, roots, and fruits. There are four pictures for each plant part.

Plants Interactive Notebook Pages:

1. Parts of a Flower - This page covers flower, stem, leaf and root. Use the flower provided or have students draw their own to go under the flaps.

2. We Eat Plants - This page covers all parts of plants and the foods we can eat from each part. Students draw or find pictures in magazines/grocery fliers to put under each flap.

3. What do plants need? - This page shows plants need air, water, food and light to grow. Use magazines to cut out pictures or draw pictures to represent each under the flaps.

These pages can fit in a composition book or spiral notebook.
