Less than $5 Christmas, Chanukah, & Kwanzaa Projects (by date, oldest first)

This may be the most meaningful assignment you give to your students all year.

This product teaches students how to write a letter to a service member who is currently deployed overseas. It describes the importance of writing to our military and gives suggestions for what to say. I use this as an extra credit assignment and hold my students to high standards about the content of their letters. It is incredibly important that genuine thought and effort go into the letters as they are going to real people currently fighting for our country.

This is a play script for Charles Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol'. It tells the story of a mean, old man named Ebenezer Scrooge, who runs a dark and miserable business. His workers are under-paid and over-worked, especially his assistant Bob Cratchett.

It is Christmas eve and his Bob asks for the day off to spend time with his family, and sick child – Tiny Tim. Scrooge almost refuses but decides to just dock his pay for the day. Then, that evening he gets a visit from his previous business partner – another miserable person called Jacob Marley.

Marley tells him he needs to change his ways or end up with the same fate as him; he tells him how he will be visited by three ghosts that night. The ghosts visit and show Scrooge various things that upset him enough to change his ways.

After the visits of the ghosts Scrooge wakes up on Christmas day a changed man and tries to put right all the wrongs he has caused over the previous decades!

A Christmas Escape Room activity. Ideal for fifth grade or sixth grade, the activity is perfect for group work; a great holiday activity; team-building activities; or for a fun, engaging and interactive lesson. The activity can be used in English class as it incorporates some ELA skills or in Social Studies.

In Task 1 students will read an informational text about Christmas and then find their way through a maze by answering true or false comprehension questions. If they answer the questions correctly they will reveal their first word.

In Task 2 students will use the same informational text to complete a crossword puzzle. Within the puzzle there are several hidden letters which will need to be unscrambled on the completion of the puzzle to reveal the second word.

In Task 3 students will have to cut out 27 timeline task cards about important holidays or festivals celebrated in the United States and around the world. When they have finished their task they can glue them onto the answer key which will reveal their third word.

In Task 4 students will have to find the missing words in a wordsearch puzzle before finding a hidden word from the letters that are left over in the puzzle. This hidden word is their fourth and final word.

Students can then complete their student answer key with the four words they revealed before checking with the teacher to see if they have escaped successfully.

A Christmas biography writing unit about Father Christmas or Santa Claus. The unit follows his life, appearance and Christmas deliveries. The NO PREP unit has been split into four separate lessons and is perfect for students in third grade or fourth grade. The first lesson is interactive and involves students cutting out facts, and then sorting these facts into paragraphs. In the second lesson the students need to use these facts to write four paragraphs. Then, in the third lesson children need to choose the most important facts and include these in an introduction; after this they need to answer several questions on a prompt sheet before writing up their conclusion. In the final lesson students need to check their draft paragraphs for mistakes before writing up their work on to a neat copy on the template provided.

The close reading activity requires NO PREP; it has a body of text that students need to read through thoroughly; then they can use the text to find the comprehension and grammar answers. All texts then have an extension activity for those fast finishers and answers, for teacher use, are on the final page of the document. It also contains a multiple choice quiz, a crossword activity and a wordsearch puzzle to consolidate learning.

Students enjoy telling their own Christmas stories. In this project, they will write and illustrate their stories of Christmas past, present, and yet to come, in a way that is similar to what happens to Scrooge in the novel.

I used this as a cumulative activity after the students had read the novel and before Christmas Break.

Students will be assigned or choose a holiday to research and then write their own informative essay. There are two pages giving different holidays to research, but you can also write your own holidays in if you would like. Students can use the graphic organizer to help organize their ideas before writing their explanatory essay.
