NEW! World Geography Summer Camp Week 1 — Geography Basics Map Skills
By Geography & Math Made Easy
Geography summer school and camps don't give us enough time to cover all the concepts and topics that need to be covered. Squeezing the curriculum
8 months is difficult; covering it over 6-8 weeks is impossible. There is so much information and so little time. This leaves us as educators with the question of what are the important aspects to cover. Having taught middle school level and high school level geography for 11 years, I have pulled out what I feel is a must!
A working knowledge of geography concepts is helpful in teaching this material. If you do not understand geography or if you have never taught geography before, no problem! Simply, read through the student material so you can help your students understand and complete the included activities. Before presenting it to your students, this will require a little mental preparation; however, this resource will save you 20+ hours of resource prep.
This lesson is composed of the first five days (Week 1).
Day 1: 5 Geography Themes
Day 2: Maps, Graphs & Charts + Follow-up Quiz
(Pie Chart, Bar Graph, Line Graph, Cartogram, Political Map, Physical Map, Climate Map, Learning to read Latitude and Longitude.)
Day 3: Looking at geography through a social, economic, political and cultural lens + Follow-up Quiz
(Understanding the meaning behind social, economic, political and cultural aspects)
Day 4: World Governments & Three Branches of Government+ Follow-up Quiz (Direct Democracy, Constitutional Democracy, Absolute Monarchy, Constitutional Monarchy, Oligarchy, Communism, Socialism)
Day 5: Types of Economic Industries + Follow-up Quiz
(Four Types of Economy, Pure market economy, a pure command economy, a mixed economy, and a traditional economy, Free Enterprise + Four Industries: primary, secondary, tertiary, quaternary)

NAFTA & The U.S./Mexico Border
By Sarah Austin
This lesson is based on my own personal experience as a participant on a USA-Mexico border tour project organized by Rethinking Schools & Global Exchange that provided first-hand experience and knowledge concerning the effects of U.S. foreign policy, such as NAFTA, on the lives of ordinary people who reside in the Tijuana area. Students will be prompted to delve far beyond the mainstream explanation that answers the critical question as to why people cross the U.S.-Mexico border. This lesson will have students examine the broader context, and underlying factors to this question, which intimately tie itself to Mexico's agricultural economy. Students will identify the causal puzzle pieces, and then create a ‘LOOP’ (web) diagram that will serve to demonstrate their understandings of how these underlying causes interconnect with one another. Materials: • One 50 Slide PowerPoint • Grading Rubrics • Student Loop Diagram Examples • Printable Handouts: 1) Handout #1- Power-Point Guided Notes 2) Handout #2- The U.S.-Mexico Border Puzzle Pieces If you liked this lesson see the 'BUNDLE unit lesson' here: NAFTA & the U.S. Mexico Border Bundle I OFTEN PROVIDE FREEBIES TO MY FOLLOWERS AND ALL NEW PRODUCTS DEBUT AT 20% OFF: • Look for the green star next to my store logo at the top right corner of this page and click it to become a follower. Applying Economics to the Ladakh
By Sarah Austin
This lesson will have students explore the two systems of ‘Capitalism’ and ‘Socialism’. Students will go beyond the surface level of understanding, and will be prompted to apply their knowledge of these two economic systems to a distant, isolated culture called ‘Ladakh’, who have been dramatically transformed by “development” or capitalism. Students will analyze a documentary film and identify examples of each economic system. Two critical thinking activities are included that will serve to demonstrate their new understandings and have students delve deeper into the economic & political dynamics shown in the film. 1) 'Loop/Web Diagram'- Students will show how the road coming into Ladakh has changed their culture and environment. 2) Debate- In this extension activity students will be assigned one of five perspectives; all of which were presented in the documentary. This activity will prompt students to rethink any assumptions and understandings they may have had tied to the concepts of progress, development, wealth and poverty. Materials: • Lesson Plan • 1 PowerPoint (26 Slides) • Documentary film titled ‘Ancient Futures: Learning from the Ladakh’ • Grading Rubrics • Printable Handouts: o HANDOUT #1: Guided PowerPoint Notes o HANDOUT #2: Economic Cheat Sheet o HANDOUT #3: Economic Labels o HANDOUT #4: Debate Activity
