If you are looking for a way to teach your students about the history and significance of the civil rights movement in the United States, get this bundle of Civil Rights Movement Reading Comprehension passages. This will help to engage the students with high-quality texts and meaningful questions that will deepen their understanding and spark their curiosity, especially during Black History Month.

The passages are perfect for grades 4, 5, and 6, but can also be used for higher or lower grades depending on the students’ reading level and background knowledge.

This bundle contains several reading comprehension passages that cover some of the most important events and figures of the civil rights movement.

The passages included in this bundle are:

• The Civil Rights Act of 1964 & The Voting Rights Act of 1965: Engage the students with the landmark legislation that outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin, and that protected the voting rights of African Americans and other minorities.
• Martin Luther King Jr. Day: These are 3 pages about the life and legacy of the most influential leader of the civil rights movement, and how his birthday became a national holiday that celebrates his vision of peace and justice.
• Rosa Parks and The Montgomery Bus Boycott: Learn about the courageous act of defiance by Rosa Parks that sparked a year-long boycott of the segregated bus system in Montgomery, Alabama, and that inspired a nationwide movement for racial equality.
• The March on Washington: The passage is about the historic demonstration that brought more than 200,000 people to the nation’s capital to demand civil and economic rights for African Americans, and that featured the famous “I Have a Dream” speech by Martin Luther King Jr.
• Brown v. Board of Education: Help the students learn about the landmark Supreme Court case that declared racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional, and that paved the way for the integration of education in America.

Each passage is followed by a set of questions that test the students’ comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills. In addition, each passage comes with an answer key that provides detailed explanations for each question.

This bundle can be used for whole-class instruction, small-group work, independent practice, homework, or assessment. It can also be integrated into social studies, language arts, or literacy units.

These African Mask art projects will inspire your students to explore their creativity with a cross-curricular lesson perfect for celebrating Black History Month. This resource is designed for 2nd-5th grade students but can easily be adapted for middle school. 

This lesson is highly engaging and contains 4 different projects. Let students choose a project, create multiple projects, or choose a project based on materials on hand while learning about African masks and Black History Month. 

This project is perfect for Black History Month (February), but can be used in conjunction with a unit on masks, collage, mixed media, or anytime of year.
