Elementary School French Handouts

This French Spring Writing Prompt resource is the fast and easy No-Prep way of adding a little boost to your writing program all while getting students to progress with their decoding and encoding skills. The vocabulary used in this resource seamlessly aligns with the Science of Reading progression recommended by many school boards and is in lock step with what is being promoted by IDAPEL and ONLit websites for teaching French language in today's classrooms.

Once you have a grasp on all the simple sounds in French, the magic happens when you get students writing. They don't even notice that all the words used are from their very own memory banks and are all decodable words from past lessons.

Who can use this resource:

Teachers who are just getting accustomed to using strategies from the Science of Reading can use these simple texts to open up independent practice, small group evaluation, or up on a digital screen for whole group instruction and reading practice.

Make a set and send them home with students to build fluency in writing and confidence in writing strategies.

The prompts are designed to offer many variations for students to use their imaginations and to build confidence in their own writing.

Correction sheet is handy for use with a substitute as they can confidently assess students and command the lesson even when they are not assured of their French skills.

What grade level:

I personally use these texts with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in French Immersion. I feel confident that students from K-3 will find these most useful and teachers can come back to the texts with any students who may be experiencing challenges in their French writing skills. Core French teachers will be sure to add the resource to their repertoire for Grades 4 to 6 as they learn to read and write at the Junior level.

Science of Reading:

These prompts are aligned with sounds being taught in any Science of Reading aligned curriculum. They are set up for student success based on the research for increasing writing proficiency and building student confidence in the classroom!

Once you have established the strategies for identifying sounds, initial sounds, and blending sounds, segmenting sounds, students will be able to use these self-driven passages on their own. What a great way to build learning autonomy!

Description :

Plongez dans l'univers de la subjectivité et de l'empathie avec "Une histoire, deux regards", un recueil unique de huit nouvelles, chacune racontée selon deux points de vue opposés. This resource gives you everything you need to teach Joshua 7 in French and to help students (native speakers or intermediate level) even as young as preschoolers to 1st to remember. The lesson focuses on the Achan and his covetousness and how it led to Israelites defeat. Students will learn about God's faithfulness to His promises.

• Full-sized 8.5x11 story pages with color. I laminate these and keep them in a binder. You can also print on both sides to save paper.
• Coloring pages - the story is in black and white for story pages or to save colored ink
• Storyboard in color
• Storyboard in black and white
• Story cards that can be used as review
• 3 Puzzles for different levels of learners! Great for retells. Can be used for oral or written retells.
• Sequence cut/paste activity.
• Word search activity using the most important words from the lesson.
• Flash cards for the memory verse, editable if you prefer a different version.
• Memory verse poster, editable if you prefer a different version.

1. How to prep:

I printed and laminated the story pages the evening before. I also printed the coloring page and the memory verse activity sheets the evening before.

2. I read the story pages. Students can color while I read to help them focus.

3. I showed the story cards (just smaller versions of the slides that students take home) to students and asked them to repeat as much of the story back to me as they can.

4. Students can put the puzzle together and retell again if there is time.

5. Students can also work on the word search or counting activity, depending on the age.

6. Sequencing activity - cut out the bottom half of the page and have the students cut out the picture boxes. Students can put the correct picture with the correct caption.

Why should I choose this resource?

1. The story comes from Scripture but is summarized for young learners. The Word of God is not compromised in the process.

2. There are a variety of coloring pages for students to do during the lesson to help them listen to the story but still busy with a non-linguistic activity so their brains do not have competition between the 2 activities.

3. There are plenty of activities to keep them engaged.

4. Easy to understand instructions for printing

5. Colorful and engaging pictures to help tell the story for pre-readers or early readers.

6. A chance to work with the story while practicing cutting, gluing, reading, and summarizing.

I make booklets by copying the pages by multiples of 2 on my printer. This is very easy to do.

1. Click print

2. Select the printer and number of copies, then search down midway and click the MULTIPLE bar

3. Select 2 so you get 2 pages per printed copy

4. You can choose to bring double sided or single sided but I prefer single sided for the little ones (you can always take out the page if they make a mistake…harder to do if they also filled out the entire other side…fewer tears for me, the better!)

5. Staple into booklets. I stapled along the binder spirals so they looked more authentic

1. You can print one image per page and make the books bigger

I used this resource with my Grade 1 and 2 students at the end of the year to celebrate our accomplishments and to create a book of our favourite memories. Students loved brainstorming ideas for the various pages. It's amazing what they remember and appreciate from the past ten months of school.

Have a look at what's on the menu at my kids' school in France. They get cheese every day!!  I'll be adding more menus weekly as I receive them.  There are so many things a French teacher can do with these in class. I have made five extremely versatile no prep printable worksheets available to use along with any and all of these French school lunch menus. Versions 1 - 4 have ten questions each while version 5 has six questions. The questions on these worksheets will have your students learning a lot about cultural differences concerning menu items as well as the amount of time French students get for lunch, why there's no menu for Wednesday, etc.

Step-by-step instructions allow each student to create classroom materials drawings during whole group instruction or independent learning time. Students can then add vocabulary, sentences, or a short idea to describe their object. This fun and exciting activity grows as students grow throughout the year.

I create a practice art notebook for students where each piece gets glued into their book as they develop mastery. The added creative writing element means they learn to talk about art in a French too!

How to prepare this resource:

Make a copy of each page and distribute to students. You can arrange to have them all done in a booklet form or, as I do, I make copies at the beginning of the year and add pages to a ‘cahier d’art’ for students to work on at their own pace once we have done a few as a group.

Students love the independence of working on the art piece on their own and as language production develops, they even go back to their first drawings to add details and sentences to describe their work!

When to use this resource in the classroom:

These activities can be used from the first week of school. Following instructions, mastering step-by-step directions can start at any time during the school year. Students will love using these pages as their confidence grows as each step shows dotted line additions that add a version of what each step looks like.

As language develops during the year, students can add details, descriptions, or story starters to prompt creative writing.

I personally use these texts with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in French Immersion. I feel confident that students from Kindergarten to Grade Three will find these most useful and teachers can come back to the texts with any students who may be experiencing challenges in their French reading skills. Core French teachers will be sure to add the resource to their repertoire for Grades 4 to 6 as they learn to read and write at the Junior level.

Have a look at what's on the menu at my kids' school in France. They get cheese every day!!  I'll be adding more menus weekly as I receive them.  There are so many things a French teacher can do with these in class. Just click here to watch a video in which I'll tell you about some of the ways I like to use these menus with my students.

I have made five extremely versatile no prep printable worksheets available to use along with any and all of these French school lunch menus. Versions 1 - 4 have ten questions each while version 5 has six questions. The questions on these worksheets will have your students learning a lot about cultural differences concerning menu items as well as the amount of time French students get for lunch, why there's no menu for Wednesday, etc.

World Autism Awareness Day Activity Pack

I love creating NO PREP activities when I can for my French teacher peeps! Sharing my resources with colleagues has been a practice since the beginning of my career and I think that’s what makes us all stick together and help one another out. French resources can be scarce, and this is what has led to my starting my STORE on TeachShare.

How to use this resource:

1. Copy out pages, I like to copy out a set and then load them into the copier and make multiples that way students sitting side by side do not have the same work and they tend to be more creative with their colouring.

2. Set out as many pink colouring materials as you can and let the students go

3. I created a poster size pair of T-shirts and copied onto blue paper to make a display for World Autism Awareness Day 2024

4. Hang student artwork below your poster and display for the school to see

5. Use writing version to create slogans, sentences, or positive affirmations to raise awareness
