This resource was created in order to help Speech Language Pathologists target initial phonemes at the word level. This resource includes a total of 40 pictured initial /h/ CV and CVC words to use the h-insertion trick during speech therapy sessions.

The h-insertion trick can be an extremely helpful strategy to use when children are stuck at the isolation level of a sound. By producing /h/ after the initial sound, the child continues their air flow, making it easier to produce the following vowel. This helps them to eliminate the prior habit of producing the incorrect sound.

Medial Short Vowel direct instruction, stations, and Boom cards!

Students will use a variety of activities to reinforce understanding of medial short vowel sounds. When teaching medial sounds I use a roller coaster arm motion providing emphasis of the medial sound at the top of the coaster. To reinforce this, I have made a visual students can use.

Direct Instruction Activity -

• Use the roller coaster and cars to segment words provided on the picture cards. Students will drive the coaster cars, identify the medial sound at the top of the coaster.
• This activity can be done over multiple days - you can focus on one vowel at a time (bring in mirrors so students can see the placement of their tongue when annunciating the short vowel sounds). You can also mix up all 5 short vowel sounds to determine if students are able to identify their sounds.
• Pictures provided have a short vowel focus, with a bonus 20 long vowel pictures.

Stations - Laminate the materials for extended use.

• Clip Cards (30 cards) - use expo markers or clothing pin to select the correct medial sound.
• Sorting (30 pictures) - Sort the pictures to the correct short sound
• 30 cards with pictures and beginning / ending sounds. Students will fill in the medial sound

Short Vowel Tab book - For extra practice, or direct instruction complete a tab book with your students. I have included a different set of pictures.

• B/W and color tab book

Set one: Students select the correct word from a choice of 3 matching the picture.

French Decodable Sentence Strips are interactive French activity cards to promote decoding and encoding skills aligned with the Science of Reading (la conscience phonologique) in the French Immersion K-2 classroom. This resource is designed to optimize learning, develop independent learning strategies, and boost student confidence in the classroom. Cultivate a love of learning French with these fun and exciting sentence strips!

How to use this resource:

Make a few copies of each card and insert into clear pockets to create a quick and easy reading centre; arrange a table with four copies to create a quiet reading group; use one-on-one with your students to assess reading levels, to gain insights to their decoding skills, encoding skills, and to inform your upcoming lesson plans. Students use whiteboard markers to sound out each sound in the word, each syllable, or each word in the sentence. What a great way to build confidence! This fun and engaging deck of 20 CARDS will reinforce PHONEMIC AWARENESS SKILLS in students as they work independently to identify the three sounds in a word.

Each card includes a large picture and four smaller related pictures with AUDIO PHONEMES attached. Three of the SOUNDS are heard in the word while one is not. The student is required to DRAG the objects with the correct sound onto the larger picture to make them disappear.

AUDIO is provided for all items and the first card provides AUDIO DIRECTIONS.

Immediate FEEDBACK is provided, and students will be automatically directed to the next card once the correct answer has been chosen.

PHONEMIC AWARENESS, or the ability to MANIPULATE INDIVIDUAL SOUNDS OR PHONEMES within words, is a critical skill for children to learn prior to decoding and spelling.

Being able to successfully IDENTIFY, SUBSTITUTE, and DELETE PHONEMES in words is a PREDICTOR of future READING SUCCESS. Because phonemic awareness involves the sounds or phonemes in words, it does not include or require knowledge of alphabetic characters.

This deck has 20 cards where students will find the beginning sounds for each picture. Students will sound out the beginning sound of the picture displayed. They will locate the shell with that letter and drag it to the beginning of the word. Once they choose a letter, it will self-check and let the students know if they have the correct answer or not.

BOOM CARDS™ are interactive task cards played on a website called Boom Learning. You must be connected to the internet to play and can play on the internet browser or on the app. To play the game you must have a free or paid account. Once you have an account, you can generate a link for your students. When you purchase this product you will download a PDF with a link inside that will take you to the game. You will be prompted to sign in or create an account. You can add this game to your personal library.
