Paragraph Practice BUNDLE - Brainstorming, Writing & Expanding Paragraphs

By Until the Pieces Fit

Included in this bundle are 3 of my favorite writing resources for helping students begin, write and expand their thoughts. These resources are interactive, with cut and paste, drawing and other activities.

1: Brainstorming and Beginning to Write Paragraphs

Do your students have difficulty when asked to write? My students were overwhelmed by the thought of writing so we took a step back. It is important to remember to take time to plan, which includes brainstorming. This packet features 5 simple topics (cats, magical adventures, exploring a castle, recess, my hero) with thematic pages to help students consider what they know.

What is included?

Start by providing students with thematic pages to help them begin the brainstorming process. Select all or some of the pages & try to have fun.

Brainstorming pages:

  • Simple questions to help students think about what they know.
  • Brainstorming pages - Students are asked to brainstorm simple words about a topic.
  • Drawing pages - Students are asked to draw a detailed picture about a topic.

Start writing using templates:

  • Write a paragraph - Choose a writing prompts that aligns to the topic you chose. 12 prompts are included
  • Question page - Designed to help students to choose their favorite information from their brainstorming
  • Templates - Student can then organize their thoughts using the hamburger model.
  • Final - lined papers for each topic/prompt.

2: Paragraph Practice - Identify introductions/conclusions, sort sentences, prompts

What are teachers saying? I love the colorful anchor charts to focus on each part individually. I also love that I can teach and students can practice each part of a paragraph individually before putting the whole thing together.

— Mary J.
Rated 5 out of 5

Do your students need some additional supports with paragraphs? My students were having difficulty with developing ideas that were on topic. They would write, however the materials didn't align. So, I made this as a practice to identify what things go together.

What is included?

  • 3 pages you can use as posters or visual introductions for introductions, supporting details and conclusions
  • Paragraph orders - 5 cut and paste pages. Students will read the sentences, cut them out, and place them in the correct order.
  • Identify introductions / conclusions (3 pages each with 3 paragraphs on each page). Student will read the paragraph and choose the best intro/conclusion from a choice of 3.
  • Identify supporting details (2 pages each with 3 paragraphs on each page). Student will read the paragraph and choose sentences that support the topic sentence.
  • Write a paragraph - Use the page of writing prompts and a hamburger writing template to practice writing a paragraph.

3: Writing Paragraphs by expanding your thoughts and adding supporting details

Do your students need some additional supports with expanding their thoughts when they are writing a paragraph? My students were having difficulty with developing ideas that were on topic & adding details to their writing. So, I made this as a practice to expanding their thoughts. (*this activity builds on my other writing packet which will be linked below)

What is included?

  • While this is posted as a PDF, the first 11 pages were made as a way to begin discussions with your students. While you can use as posters or visual supports, I merely projected the pages onto my white board and we discussed the importance of our writings.
  • 2 pages of matching - Each page has simple sentences students can read. They will draw lines from one side to the other to select the sentences that support one another.
  • 2 pages of multiple choice - A sentence is provided, and students will select the sentence that supports it best from a choice of 4.
  • Paragraph orders - 4 cut and paste pages. Students will read the sentences, cut them out, and place them in the correct order.
  • Write a paragraph - Use the page of writing prompts to write a paragraph that has additional supporting details.
  • Templates - Depending on the level of support your student needs I have included 3 different templates. The first is the hamburger, however adapted to support students in providing supporting details. The other templates are unlined/lined boxes.

These resources can be used in direct instruction, small /large groups. I have attached it as a pdf, so you could project the pages onto your board and write. Please reach out with any questions: untilthepiecesfit2@gmail.com
