What Students Will Be Doing:

This is a 3-part assignment that incorporates both individual and group assignments. Groups of students (4-6) are responsible for writing an individual monologue, a group script and a final monologue reflection. Students will take on the role of a character from a well known fairy tale. In the individual monologue, students will get to explore the perspective of their character and how the new dilemma a character is faced with should be solved. The group will then figure out a solution to the dilemma and will write a short script to show their resolution. After the group has resolved the dilemma, each character will have an opportunity to reflect on how their character feels about the outcome. Don't worry I've included some rubrics that you can use for each section too and some worksheets to help guide student thinking.

For first time BOOM Card™ users, the resource comes with an explanation of how to assign the cards to your class, and has lots of useful links to support you using the activity.

Both activities follow a similar format, with slight variances to the BOOM Cards version to allow the resource to be digital and self-marking.

In Task 1 students will read an informational text about the Great Depression and then find their way through a maze by answering true or false comprehension questions. If they answer the questions correctly they will reveal their first word.

In Task 2 students will complete a crossword puzzle by answering ten questions. Answering these questions correctly will reveal some hidden letters which need to be unscrambled to reveal the second word.

In Task 3 students will sort 27 timeline task cards about the 1900s, putting them in order from the earliest date to the most recent. When they have finished their third word will be revealed.

In Task 4 students will have to find the missing words in a wordsearch puzzle before finding a hidden word from the letters that are left over in the puzzle. This hidden word is their fourth and final word.

Completed with a partner, students will analyze how writers use metaphors in poetry by looking at examples. The PDF provides multiple examples to guide students. They will then read and analyze a mentor poem and utilize the same structure to write their poem. They will love creating their poems and watching their ideas come to life! This well-organized activity allows students to effortlessly become poets, while thinking about concise and precise word choice, counting syllables to create rhythm, getting exposure to high-quality examples, and learning something new! Students will fill these pages in response to any novel they are reading, whether independently or as part of a whole class reading assignment. Each Project includes a student page with instructions and directions to complete each journal page, as well as a grading rubric to use these journal pages as a whole novel project. You could also use these pages individually and pick ones to use for a specific concept to teach or reflect on. Level one is geared toward middle school-aged students or those who require additional support or guidance with a reflective journal piece. Level two is intended for high school students and requires more in-depth analysis and writing skills. Have your students explore the Protest Movements of the 1960’s by becoming an author of a textbook; whose job is to research, write, and creatively craft a chapter that will both inform and engage its readers regarding a protest movement of this era of time. Using Google Slides, students will be assigned one of the six following protest movements from which to research and create their chapter on:

• The United Farm Workers (UFW)
• The Anti-Vietnam War movement
• The Women’s movement
• The Gay Rights movement
• The Environmental movement
• The American Indian movement (AIM)

Using an inquiry based approach, the accompanied Slide Presentation will first have students explore the cause and effect relationship of how these protest movements came to exist in America during this period of time. The latter portion of the presentation will provide students with an overview of the chapter project with student examples. The final activity will involve students sharing their chapter with their classmates, and completing a Venn Diagram that will serve to critically compare the six different protest movements.

This lesson/project easily lends itself to having a sub take over as well!
