How does fashion industry culture affect us as individuals and the physical characteristics of a place? The bigger picture is how is it going to affect our culture, practices, and the environment in years to come. Is fast fashion sustainable? This lesson Fast Fashion will engage students through the use of music and cooperative learning, providing students with a "big picture" surrounding fast fashion industry. Students will also understand the cause and effect of our choices today.

The Global Challenges unit of AP Spanish® has many interesting contexts, including the environment. This digital and printable article talks about the effects of global warming in Antarctica, and explains the paradox of how rising temperatures actually cause more snow! Distance learners can complete this via a Google Doc or by doing the auto-graded goformative version. Students who prefer paper copies can have a print-out! Save time searching the net to find a good article, and save more time by letting goformative grade this for you! Another benefit to the goformative version is that students can see the article side by side with the questions, and the questions are embedded just where they can find the answer! It's a great scaffold for students still developing their reading comprehension skills!

1. Distribute Sections: Hand out individual sections of the mural to students.

AP Spanish® teachers: save time searching for the right video for your students! This Google Doc contains links to TWO YouTube videos and a viewing guides perfect for Unit 6: Los retos ambientales. One video has an auto-grading Edpuzzle version! The accompanying comprehension questions are digital for distance learners and printable for in-person learners, and they are customizable to make them just right for your students’ needs! 

Have students watch these videos to get a sense of some of the problems we face with our environment. One video talks about 5 specific problems in Mexico, their causes and their consequences. It is a short video, but the narrator speaks rather fast. This resource comes with a comprehension guide in graphic organizer format, or you may choose to use the multiple choice Edpuzzle version. I find that the Edpuzzle version is a good scaffold to aid student comprehension because the questions can be inserted right after the information has been provided! This Edpuzzle is also auto-graded to save you time and to give students instant feedback! The second video is about what would happen if all the ice in the world were to melt. It talks about the possibilities and the human and animal consequences that would occur. This video is accompanied by short answer comprehension questions.

Of course, both viewing guides come with a teacher answer key, and all questions can be edited to suit your needs!

Environmental challenges is a great theme to explore as a Global Challenge, or as part of the Science and Technology Unit.  These videos could be a great source for a debate as this topic can be controversial!

Practice AP Spanish® reading comprehension with these 2 articles to learn about the dying corals of the Great Barrier Reef and the growing problem of Electronic Garbage. They can be assigned digitally for distance learners and printed for in-person students.

The articles are written from the perspective of a Mexican and a Colombian and therefore make great sources for cultural comparisons and discussions about perspectives in different places in the Spanish-speaking world.

Both articles are accompanied by comprehension questions and the Corals article also has a GoFormative version which is auto-graded- a great time saver for teachers! Another benefit to Goformative is that questions can be inserted exactly where you would like them to be to make reading comprehension a little easier for students. The questions appear side by side with the article, so students don't need to scroll back and forth to read the question and then search for the answer in the text.
