As the evening unfolds, Eddie faces a dilemma: continue funding Callie's lifestyle or assert his own needs. Ultimately, the story takes a decisive turn when Eddie decides to break up with Callie, freeing himself from the financial burden and asserting independence.

This highly relatable narrative emphasizes the significance of financial awareness, effective communication in relationships, establishing boundaries, practicing self-advocacy, nurturing independence and self-worth, and fostering empathy and understanding.

Reading Passage Overview - "Paying Tribute"

This reading passage examines the short story of a bully who is mean to others in order to protect himself from other bullies. Students will evaluate the morality of his actions and the level of choice he has by studying the factors which prompt him to behave the way he does.

This resource examines the short story of a teenage boy who kept his LGBTQ+ identity a secret from even his closest friends out of fear of being rejected and losing them. He eventually musters the courage to reveal his only secret to his best friend Jacob. To both Ethan and the reader's surprise, Jacob's reaction and response leaves readers feeling inspired and better understanding the positive impact empathy and a willingness to listen and act can be on an LGBTQ+ individual.

Many LGBTQ+ students will find themselves struggling with the unknown. The way in which students respond to LGBTQ+ identities and relationships could provide key support and understanding for their peers. Within our classrooms, we may have teens who are discovering their own sexual identity. This resource, and story, highlights positive ways that students might respond to their LGBTQ+ peers.

Through reading the passage and delving into reflection questions, your students will learn important ways to show empathy and support for others. Students will also recognize and examine examples of unsupportive behaviors and actions that can be hurtful to LGBTQ+ friends who fear coming out or just came out. They will make connections between these key ideas and the passage under study. They will also learn about why many LGBTQ+ teens hide or disguise their sexual orientation and/or gender identity for and brainstorm healthy coping strategies to help navigate LGBTQ+ conflicts related to coming out. It’s essential that young people develop empathy for those who are different to them. This resource examines the short story of a teenage boy who gradually reveals his LGBTQ+ identity to different groups of people at his school. At one point, and for a brief moment, he becomes a victim of bullying until a friend of his moves from being a “bystander” to an “upstander” and speaks up against this negative treatment. He challenges the boy's homophobic comments, offensive remarks, and attitudes (in a nonviolent way) making his LGBTQ friend feeling safe, valued, and reassured. This short passage leaves readers feeling inspired and better understanding the positive impact empathy can have on an LGBTQ+ individual.

This reading passage examines the short story of a teenager posting a photo to Instagram. The text provides an insight into her inner monologue and emotional state as the pressure to get likes and comments mounts. Students will examine the authenticity of social media posts and the importance of social media in teen life.

There can be many challenges that students face when dealing with their sexual orientation. This packet of work presents students with a realistic story of a male teen struggling with accepting his own identity. Wary that he may be judged, shunned and not accepted, the LGBTQ+ teen describes the immense pressure he is under. Your students will discuss and unpack what is means for some teens to be gay in an environment that doesn’t support homosexuality and diversity.

Students who identify as being part of the LGBTQ+ community may find themselves hiding who they are from their peers and family. For some students, they may be wrestling with conflicting feelings of wanting to come out. However, some may choose not to out of fear - just like the narrator in the reading passage.

Through a variety of activities, students are guided to explore the concepts within the text. An anticipation guide helps learners to consider their current thoughts and beliefs surrounding the experiences of LGBTQ+ people. Students are led through reflections and prompts that encourage empathetic thinking. As teachers, we see the value in equipping our students with the coping strategies they need to deal with their relationships and friendships. These activities encourage social and emotional learning that they can use to understand the difficulties that others may face in their daily lives.

This resource allows for courageous conversations on this sensitive topic through the use of a reading passage and anticipation guide. Similar to viewing a case study, your students may find they can relate to aspects of the story. For other students, the passage may spark feelings of empathy for the LGBTQ+ teen described.
