Early Elementary (K-2) Catch the Sight Word Games

By A Teachers Sidekick

This is a collection of sight word games that I created for Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade. Each game, you are catching some sort of animal with the sight words written on them.

**These activities will take some prep. Other materials you will need will be popsicle sticks, glue/tape, and scissors**

Between 1 to 4 students can play this game. To play the game, you will need to lay out the animals with the words facing up. Have students sit or stand beside each other with the nets in their hands, holding them all in the same position (so no one tries to cheat). Then call out a word. Students will race to find and catch the animals with the word on it first. Whichever student catches the animal first, they take that animal and add it to their pile. Once all the animals are caught, have students count up how many they have. Whoever has the most wins.

I hope you enjoy the product. Please rate and review.

By Your Reading Tutor

Make teaching spelling and decoding fun with Magic Squares for Phonics! They are engaging and align with the Science of Reading.   Your students will be spelling, decoding, and building their vocabulary while having fun!

Students will develop orthographic mapping skills by connecting sounds to letters when spelling and writing words. This will in turn build stronger word recognition skills.

  • The focus or target concept is centered on the board with a grey background.
  • My online classroom uses the activity for our session warm-up or a brain break.
  • Print and laminate to use over and over.

Why your students will love this:

Your students will love practicing reading, writing, and spelling in a new way during reading stations or independent practice.  They’ll be engaged and having fun while playing with words and learning new words with short vowel sounds.
