Africa Geography: A Long Walk to Water Interactive Notebook (LOST BOYS)

This lesson is easy enough for 5th graders to understand yet works well with students up to grade 12. Modifications can be made as needed.

This Africa book study unit is written based on the story of the Lost Boys in the book: A Long Walk to Water. This is a great way to study Sudan and its struggles throughout the years. It teaches how the goodwill of one person can have a domino effect and change the lives of many while exploring the geographical aspects, environmental issues, political issues, causes of the Sudan wars, resources, and cultures of Sudan. Team up with the language arts teacher and blend geography and language arts.

OBJECTIVES

The learner will become familiar with the main characters and their plight.
The learner will describe how unclean water impacts the Sudanese.
The learner will explore the cause and effects of the Second Sudanese War and its outcomes.
The learner will understand the impact the Second Sudanese War had on the families living in Sudan
The learner will analyze the culture and living conditions of Sudanese culture.
The learner will sympathize or empathize and attempt to relate to the feelings of Salva and other characters.
The learner will predict the outcomes of the Lost Boys' experiences and the war.
The learner will value the privilege of having water and resources.
The learner will collaborate with others to gain an in-depth understanding of who the Lost Boys are and the challenges they face.
The learner will discover how the goodwill of one person can change the projection of someone’s life.

Students will also learn the following: Who the President was during the Civil War, the main cause of the Civil War, abolitionists - Frederick Douglas, John Brown, Harriet Tubman, and Harriet Beecher Stowe - when they were born and where, where they died and where, what they did during the Civil War, and how they made a difference for the enslaved or tried to help them, The Underground Railroad - what it was and how it was used, The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 - what it was and what the federal government was responsible for finding, why the South relied on slavery as much as they did and what their concerns were if it was to stop, The Confederate States, the first state to secede, and the Union, what unified means, when the Civil War began, how long the Civil War was, some major battles that took place that include - The Battle of Shiloh, The Battle of Bull Run, The Battle of Antietam, The Battle of Fredericksburg, The Battle of Gettysburg, and The Siege of Vicksburg are reviewed, what happened at each of these battles, who won, and facts about each battle are presented in this product, what happened when the Civil War ended, the kinds of weapons that were used during the Civil War on both sides - muskets, bayonets, and cannons, Why Abraham Lincoln didn't want African Americans to participate in the Civil War, who mane up the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, how brave African Americans were during the Civil War, what women did around the home and the community during the Civil War - how they took care of the home, raised money for war supplies, where they worked - factory and government jobs, acted as nurses to take care of sick and wounded soldiers, became spies on both sides (North and South), and how women would would dress up as men so they could fight in the Civil War, children and what their role was during the Civil War is also reviewed - how old children were when they had to help fight during the Civil War, younger children had to help during the Civil War as drummers and messengers, and how children felt when their family members were gone for long periods of time or never returned home.

Lord of the Flies Unit Plan: Read through a choice of 2 different lenses!

This is a full unit plan for reading Lord of the Flies by William Golding through a choice of two different lenses: Psychology or Gender. You'll receive the full Unit Plan in a grid format, as well as every assignment for both lenses.

Students will be put in groups according to their chosen lens and will explore a number of resources pertaining to their lens. They'll complete a wide variety of assignments, including a Double Entry Journal, Socratic Seminar, Symbolism Word Splash and Explanation, Theme Formal Essay, and Characterization Creative Situational Writing. The directions and rubric are included for each assignment. Since it's in a Google Doc, it's all ready for you to post and have your students complete digitally, OR you can print it out and have then do it that way, too!

Because evidence in the humanities is rarely factual or indisputable, student writers will always need to frame, unpack, and analyze their evidence. This handout offers several suggestions about how, as it were, to "make the evidence speak." It also offers strategies for how to organize evidence into a series of body paragraphs that build upon one another in a logical and compelling manner. (2 pages)

• Topic Sentences / Transitional Sentences (Handout #4): This handout offers advice about how students can use transitional expressions to clarify the logical connections between the claims in each of their topic sentences. It includes a list of different types of transitional expressions along with several examples. (2 pages)

• Precepts for Effective Prose (Handout #5): This handout features about a dozen precepts or "rules of thumb" that students should follow when writing academic papers. The handout contains brief paragraphs on each of the following topics: Avoid plot summary; Always use the present tense; Minimize intensifiers; Alternatives to writing "It says"!! (2 pages)

• Sample Introductory Paragraphs: Look at six introductory paragraphs from articles published by literary scholars in academic journals over the last decade. Invite students to reflect on what they find to be particularly effective — or ineffective —about each introductory paragraph. How does each writer hook the reader's interest? How do they construct an interpretive problem? How do they generate a complex thesis statement? (6 pages)

• Paper Outline Template: Invite students to use this template when generating the outlines for their analytical papers. (3 pages)

• Rubric: Use this rubric to evaluate the analytical papers that your students write in response to any literary text. (1 page)
