This lesson is easy enough for 5th graders to understand yet works well with students up to grade 12. Modifications can be made as needed.

This Africa book study unit is written based on the story of the Lost Boys in the book: A Long Walk to Water. This is a great way to study Sudan and its struggles throughout the years. It teaches how the goodwill of one person can have a domino effect and change the lives of many while exploring the geographical aspects, environmental issues, political issues, causes of the Sudan wars, resources, and cultures of Sudan. Team up with the language arts teacher and blend geography and language arts.

OBJECTIVES

• The learner will become familiar with the main characters and their plight.
• The learner will describe how unclean water impacts the Sudanese.
• The learner will explore the cause and effects of the Second Sudanese War and its outcomes.
• The learner will understand the impact the Second Sudanese War had on the families living in Sudan
• The learner will analyze the culture and living conditions of Sudanese culture.
• The learner will sympathize or empathize and attempt to relate to the feelings of Salva and other characters.
• The learner will predict the outcomes of the Lost Boys' experiences and the war.
• The learner will value the privilege of having water and resources.

Looking for a way to have some fun while learning music? Look no further. This Graphic Scores Unit will have your students exploring how to represent sound using graphics and composing in no time! There are 3 main lessons included in this unit, however, the last lesson will likely take 6-8 lessons to put together and perform. This unit is one I have used with my own students so I know how much fun they have with it! The great thing with graphic scores is you don't really need any instruments to compose which makes this unit even better if you're teaching music on a cart or have limited resources available.

Overview:

This graphic score short unit exposes students to what a graphic score is. They get to represent sound using graphics and compose their own graphic score using found sounds. Students will learn how sound and music can be represented using graphics. They will practice representing a short piece of music through graphics. After, they will represent common soundscapes using their own graphics and will then create their own graphic score to perform. I created this in Google Docs/Slides so that you can customize this unit to your own unique needs.

Learning Goals:

• We are learning how to represent sounds and music using non-traditional notation.
• We are learning to compose a piece of music using found sounds and represent our sound using graphics.

Success Criteria:

• I can represent sound using graphics.
• I can compose a piece of music with a group and perform it using my score.

Below are the specific details for each individual session which can be used in isolation or as a comprehensive curriculum.

• Session 1 - Welcome and Introduction to Mindfulness: This session serves as an orientation where students are introduced to the "Mindfully Me" program. It emphasizes the importance of mindfulness in everyday life, explores the expectations for the group, and establishes a safe and supportive atmosphere.
• Session 2 - Mindful Moments: In this session, students delve into the concept of mindfulness and practice being fully present in the moment. They engage in mindfulness activities to understand the power of the "here and now."
• Session 3 - Exploring Feelings: This session guides students to explore their emotions. They learn to identify and understand their feelings and develop strategies for coping with difficult emotions constructively.
• Session 4 - Mindful Senses: Students explore their senses and how their senses can be used as anchors for mindfulness. They learn to focus on sensory experiences to stay present and engage in practical sensory activities.
• Session 5 - Mindful Breathing: Mindful breathing is introduced as a powerful tool for self-regulation. Students practice various mindful breathing techniques to manage stress and enhance emotional control.
• Session 6 - Gratitude: Gratitude is the focus of this session, encouraging students to cultivate a positive mindset. They explore the concept of gratitude and engage in activities to foster appreciation for the present moment.
• Session 7 - Termination and Review: The final session serves as an opportunity for students to review their mindfulness journey throughout the program. They reflect on their progress and discuss how they plan to incorporate mindfulness into their daily lives moving forward.

This is a full unit plan for reading Lord of the Flies by William Golding through a choice of two different lenses: Psychology or Gender. You'll receive the full Unit Plan in a grid format, as well as every assignment for both lenses.

Students will be put in groups according to their chosen lens and will explore a number of resources pertaining to their lens. They'll complete a wide variety of assignments, including a Double Entry Journal, Socratic Seminar, Symbolism Word Splash and Explanation, Theme Formal Essay, and Characterization Creative Situational Writing. The directions and rubric are included for each assignment. Since it's in a Google Doc, it's all ready for you to post and have your students complete digitally, OR you can print it out and have then do it that way, too!
