What is a Surd? This is a surprisingly slippery topic. As a teacher or tutor, we might have an understanding of what one is, but there are a lot of loopholes, traps and exceptions. This poster helps! We have found in our research that explanations of Surds often omit certain pieces of important information in order to generate a simpler understanding, only for the student to be told that there are some exceptions to the rules. This poster therefore aims to set a firm grounding on which to build an understanding of surds without having to navigate through the maze of exceptions and loopholes. Connect is a math-based card game that engages students. They can practice any math skill and have fun in this fast-paced environment. Students use flashcard-like playing cards and math symbols to match each other's cards. When there is a match, both players shout out the answer to the shown equation, and the fastest player wins!

The catch is, there could be multiple matches in a round when the top cards are taken off, creating a chain reaction of fun!

The best part is, you can edit the cards using Google Slides to fit any of your needs! This game can be used for ANY skill. Currently, the game is set up for solving trinomials when a = 1, but you can replace equations as you see fit. After reading “Making Number Talks Matter” by Cathy Humphreys and Ruth Parker, I was inspired to build on their discussions of number sense.

**** I strongly recommend the book!

The goal of these activities is to ultimately get students thinking about numbers in more ways than one. When we ask them to find the amount without using pencil and paper, we ask them to find and create patterns. When I say “without counting” I mean that look they get—where they close one eye and squint and point to the numbers as they compute from their seats. Students will start to realize symmetry, groupings, and patterns.

These pages are intended for use with a projector but could be adjusted for small group instruction. The first page is intended for the initial display. Have students mentally solve the problem silently and independently. One students have an answer they can give a signal to show they have a number in mind—how you choose the signal is up to you but a simple thumbs up in front of their chest (so as not to distract or discourage their classmates) would suffice. The second page puts the same problem in the corner but leaves room for notes. Here is where you put student responses in any organized fashion you prefer—the important part here is to make sure you are recording ONLY the answers (keep your poker face!). Once you have student responses, ask students to defend their reasoning or find errors in words while you scribe their thinking on the board. This is a great opportunity for students to see that there is more than one way to approach a problem and come out with an accurate answer. As you progress, it is easy to transfer their thinking into more generalized “rules” in math.

It's Tic-Tac-Toe... but with math!

Students can practice factoring quadratics in this player vs player game.

Problems randomly generated are a FACTORABLE quadratic every time. Includes possible negative a's, b = 0, c = 0. It also includes problems where students may have to factor out a GCF first. No solutions need Quadratic Formula to find. No two sheets will be the same because the problems are completely randomly generated within the constraints.

Features:

* Runs anywhere Google Sheets can run.

*Three levels. a = 1, a is prime, a can be composite

* Computer generates unlimited problems, runs the game, and knows when students are right or wrong.

* Students are given 10 questions. The first to answer all 10 correct, picks the square.

* Computer checks the answers and knows when someone wins!

* Students can use their own avatars or take from 7 supplied.

In this version, answers must be completely factored and in an acceptable format for the computer to mark it correct. This means negative leading coefficients and GCFs MUST be factored and placed in front. Each factor MUST have parentheses around them, even they are a monomial (The order of these factors don't matter). There MUST be no spaces in your answer.

NOTE: This sheet contains a script that needs your okay to run. A warning message will pop-up. The script is written in Google App Script and is safe. The script modifies only its own sheets and nothing else. You can view the script through the Extensions-> App Script
