11th Grade Social Emotional Learning Lesson (by date, oldest first)

This lesson emphasizes identifying stress as a process that takes place in the brain and body, identifying when stress can be helpful (eustress), when stress becomes overwhelming (distress), and emphasizes the use of coping skills to mitigate the negative effects of stress.

I find older kids often know their preferred copings skills and have often already spent time with their helping adults exploring/practicing them. So, this lesson does NOT teach specific coping skills. Instead, it explains what is going on in the brain and body when stress is felt, how stress is natural and normal, and why use of coping skills is important to capitalize on stress when we need it. Teaching about stress as normal, and even positive, offers a validating and empowering approach to encouraging the use of positive coping skills.

The slides and worksheet are simple to increase comprehension and suit middle through high school students.

This lesson includes presentation notes (discussion points and questions slide-by-slide included) (2 pages), slides to present (8 slides) , and a worksheet (1 page).

This bundle combines general information of managing stress and how coping skills work to improve mental health with a lesson specific to testing anxiety.

Though we wish otherwise, grief is a topic that cannot always be avoided, even at a young age. This curriculum offers materials for SIX WEEKS of meetings, discussions, and activities. This curriculum is designed to fit the needs of middle school students (grades 5-8), though it can easily be tailored or adjusted to fit many different age ranges. Student standards met are included in each lesson, as well as week-by-week lesson plans and a follow up survey to conclude. Questions? Ask away.

Creating a positive environment for students is a top priority, but it can be difficult when individuals lack an awareness of the impact of their words towards others, especially when it does not affect them in the same way. This activity brings awareness and a better understanding, while also increasing empathy and care toward others. I also like to remind students that we cannot control what other people chose to say and do, though we can take time to educate and create awareness, especially when something they are saying or doing is impacting us. Mindfulness is the practice of purposely focusing your attention on the present moment—and accepting it without judgment. It is a concept that can be used to support and strengthen students’ social and emotional skills and development. Teaching mindfulness in the classroom can lead to positive outcomes including improving students' well-being, reducing their stress levels, focusing students' attention on what's important, encouraging self-regulation, and improving behavior.

✅ Included are: the article (one for students and one for the teacher with teacher notes), article vocabulary sheet, two differentiated “Purpose for Reading” question worksheets, and ANSWER KEYS. (The article has already been annotated for you in the color red to help you facilitate discussion and questions.) This is a great opportunity for students to read a non-fiction text (article) to gain a deeper understanding of how mindfulness is currently being practiced in schools today and the impact it has on student discipline and school culture.

✅ Each assessment includes it's own unique Rubric and Bulletin Board Task Display Page to showcase student work immediately upon completion! There are two different rubrics that come in two different formats. The first set of rubrics contain just the rubric by itself and the other set includes the same rubric with a "Comments/Feedback" section at the bottom. TIME SAVER!
