7th Grade Social Emotional Learning Lesson (by date, oldest first)

This lesson emphasizes identifying stress as a process that takes place in the brain and body, identifying when stress can be helpful (eustress), when stress becomes overwhelming (distress), and emphasizes the use of coping skills to mitigate the negative effects of stress.

I find older kids often know their preferred copings skills and have often already spent time with their helping adults exploring/practicing them. So, this lesson does NOT teach specific coping skills. Instead, it explains what is going on in the brain and body when stress is felt, how stress is natural and normal, and why use of coping skills is important to capitalize on stress when we need it. Teaching about stress as normal, and even positive, offers a validating and empowering approach to encouraging the use of positive coping skills.

The slides and worksheet are simple to increase comprehension and suit middle through high school students.

This lesson includes presentation notes (discussion points and questions slide-by-slide included) (2 pages), slides to present (8 slides) , and a worksheet (1 page).

Creating a positive environment for students is a top priority, but it can be difficult when individuals lack an awareness of the impact of their words towards others, especially when it does not affect them in the same way. I also like to remind students that we cannot control what other people chose to say and do, though we can take time to educate and create awareness, especially when something they are saying or doing is impacting us. This lesson can be customized to fit whatever statements would be most beneficial in recognizing within your school.

Though we wish otherwise, grief is a topic that cannot always be avoided, even at a young age. This curriculum offers materials for SIX WEEKS of meetings, discussions, and activities. This curriculum is designed to fit the needs of middle school students (grades 5-8), though it can easily be tailored or adjusted to fit many different age ranges. Student standards met are included in each lesson, as well as week-by-week lesson plans and a follow up survey to conclude. Questions? Ask away.

This interactive, fun, and lighthearted activity is made for a creative way to discuss identity and the growth and change that comes with becoming who we hope to be and the impact we hope to make. This activity includes a digital download that is ready to go for your next classroom lesson - included in the presentation is a "ready for use" Google Slide (adjust and personalize if needed), an interactive icebreaker, directions for the main activity (Blindfolded Self-Portraits!), reflection questions, and discussion points throughout the lesson. It is a must each year for my middle school students now - but I can envision this activity being successful for multiple grade levels - Upper elementary, middle, and high school! All you need to prep is a blank piece of paper for each student and this lesson is all ready for your use!
