I HATE writing seating charts and I made these so I wouldn’t have to anymore.

But I didn’t stop there... I wanted a way to organize students more efficiently for checking work and giving feedback, as well as having a way to modify my seating chart based on my instructional needs, so I made all kinds of seating charts and used my knowledge of Excel to make this SMART. • Sort students by mastery to focus on a specific part of the classroom for intervention
• Sort students by work speed to give feedback to students who may work more quickly, and give those students who may work slower more time to complete their assignment before having feedback.

UNDERSTANDING & READING GRAPHS & CHARTS IN GEOGRAPHY

INTRODUCTION ACTIVITY

This lesson is an introductory lesson to (1) prepare students and a climate students with the different types of graphs and charts, (2) to understand the difference between a graph and a chart, (3) begin learning to decipher the data each represents and (4) how each represents the data.

OBJECTIVE:
o The learner will understand the difference between a graph and a chart and will be able to identify each.
o The learner will recognize 14 graphs and/or charts.
o The learner will interpret 14 graphs and/or charts.

MATERIALS:

o Reading Activity: (2 pages) Is it a Graph or Chart? (Included)
o 14 Graph & Map Stations (Included)
o List of graphs & charts (Included)
o Laminate- Laminate all 14 stations and list of graphs and charts for future use and

durability. o Blue painters tape to display stations on the wall throughout the

classroom
o Rulers for each station for students to use in reading the graphs.
o Student answer sheet, one per student or one per team to save paper and ink.

o Exit Cards (Included)
o Timer to measure time at each station.

PREPARATION:

Laminate each station and the list of chart and graph names for each station. The list of chart and graph names will be used as a reference for students. Prepare each station with a ruler and any other supplies that may be needed.

INTRODUCTION:
Either show an introduction video (there are some suggestions below) or have students participate in the introduction activity.

PROCEDURE:
Reading Activity: Organize the class into teams of 2-4, at the teacher’s discretion. Have student groups read and discuss the student reading activity (2 pages included).

Carousel Activity: Student groups will rotate from one station to the next answering four (4) questions at each station and identifying each graph and/or chart. Based on the information provided in the reading on how to determine a graph and/or chart, students will identify each station as a graph or chart, how the data is being displayed, the name of the graph or chart, and provide an interpretation of each. Provide groups 3 minutes at each station; use a timer. You may cut down on the number of stations if- your class time is more limited. Students will work together to complete the questions for each station on their Student Answer Sheet. When the timer goes off, all groups will move on to the next station. Once the carousel activity is complete, display each chart and answer and discuss them together allowing students to correct their answers.

CLOSURE / EVALUATION:
Have students complete and submit an Exit Card

ENRICHMENT REVIEW ACTIVITY:
Have students choose a topic and create their own chart or graph as a home assignment for extra credit. They can present and display them in the classroom the next day.

Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year and Spring Festival, is an annual 15-day Chinese festival that begins with the new moon that occurs between January 21 and February 20. This lesson will place students in the role of a Supreme Court judge! Students will analyze eight fictitious scenarios based upon actual Supreme Court cases. Drawing upon a judicial mindset-- students are to predict which Constitutional Amendments apply to each case, and then debate the central question of each case. See examples below;

LESSON ONE: Reconstruction Era [Intro]

LESSON ONE will have students examine;

• the different ways in which newly freed slaves expressed their emancipation
• the POV of a Freedmen (POV Activity). Students will respond and debate four questions central to this time period from a Freedman's perspective;

1. Now that the Civil War is over, who should own and control the plantations?
2. What do you propose should happen to the ex-Confederate leaders?
3. Who should be allowed to vote in the new South? Everyone? Only formerly enslaved people? Only those who were loyal to the United States during the war? Women?
4. How will African Americans be protected from the revenge of the defeated soldiers and from the plantation owners?
5. What conditions should be put on the Southern states before they are allowed to return to the Union?

LESSON TWO: The Pursuit to Vote

LESSON TWO will have students examine;

LESSON THREE will have students examine;

• the organization's primary tactics of using intimidation & fear in fighting against social equality, and why many poor whites were recruited to join the KKK organization.
• & compare/contrast the circumstances & social conditions of two former white supremacist leaders (one who lived during the era of Jim Crow, and the other of present day).

LESSON FOUR: Jim Crow Laws

LESSON FOUR will have students examine;

• the period of the Jim Crow era, with a focus on the segregation of schools.
• the implications of monumental Supreme Court decisions of 'Plessy v. Ferguson', and 'Brown V. Board of Education'.

Choice of three supplementary activities; 

• The 1st Optional Activity will have students analyze four political cartoons. Students will identify whether the author was FOR or AGAINST the Jim Crow Laws, & describe supportive details from the cartoon on their POLITICAL CARTOON HANDOUT.

• The 2nd Optional Activity will have students critically read a primary source article titled ‘A TALE OF TWO SCHOOLS’, and respond to text dependent questions in their ‘TALE OF TWO SCHOOLS QUESTIONS HANDOUT. The teacher can do a read-aloud, OR students can read independently. Class discussion is encouraged.

• The 3rd Optional Activity will have students analyze a film titled ‘FREEDOM SONG’. Students will apply their knowledge from their guided notes, and respond to open-ended questions in their FREEDOM SONG HANDOUT.
