Solid Read Aloud is a monthly classroom read aloud that focuses on poetry for first, second, and third graders. The following poems and books are used throughout the unit: Bats, Flying Bats, and Those Bats from Can Teach; Stellaluna by Janell Cannon; Bats by Gail Gibbons. The Bat Solid Read Aloud is designed for a week long duration. During this week the read aloud will include: poetry, fiction, and nonfiction selections. Also included, poetry writing connection, graphic organizers, writing project, and art connection. This read aloud plan can easily be extended to fit a two week duration. The read aloud week will culminate with an art project which is used to display the students’ final writing piece. 1. Same Picture Four Settings- Students are given a partial character drawing and asked to draw that character in four different settings. There are two ways to complete this assignment. I have provided a list of possible settings to draw out (students would pick these out of a hat/bowl, OR they could choose four from the list to use).
2. Describe the Setting-Five different pictures are given. You can give it to students at random or give it to all five students. Their instructions are to (using complete sentences) describe the setting.
3. Setting for any book- Use this chart to help students fill out their knowledge of the setting of any book.
