Start the year off right with this wonderful lesson about the Japanese holiday, Tanabata! Using the book The Star Festival by Mona Ritchie Hadley, introduce your students to this wonderful holiday while discussing wishes and dreams for the upcoming year. Read the poem and then learn the speech piece. Divide into two groups while chanting and playing the two individual rhythm parts on rhythm instruments of your choice. Great for introducing and/or reviewing triplets. Use for late 2nd-4th grade as an end of year or beginning of the year setting of wishes.

Use this book to discuss anxiety and what your students can do to manage it when they experience it. Then sing the song and have the students literally rise up and then wave to each other when you are singing those lines to bring the class together as a community. Repeat as many times as necessary. Cup rhythms are terrific for your students of all ages! Inexpensive plastic cups from the dollar store, Target, or others make excellent substitutes for percussion instruments and in unison played together, solidifies steady beat, rhythm acuity, and gets everyone playing as an ensemble!

In this arrangement of everyone's favorite from the 1970s ABC, from the Jackson Five, students will read each corresponding colored section along with the form identifier for the amount of times played.

Discuss form with the students and teach them (by rote) the rhythms on the powerpoint with the corresponding repeats. Then, apply it your class set of cups (to be done on the ground, in their seat, or however)!

Notation is as follows:

• CUP WITH ARROW - to be played by striking the cup (upside down) on the floor
• CUP WITH HAND - to be played with cup on the floor and patting the top of the cup
• CLAP - hands clap once
• QUARTER REST - one beat rest

Use this song tale about the little red hen to sing about what happens in the story! Explain the holiday of Passover as well as some of the Yiddish terms in the book. Discuss with the students what kindness means and how friends can show this kindness to each other and how the hen shows kindness. Read the book and then sing along.
