The Secret of Star Hill is an exciting graded reader for young learners aged 9–12. It is perfect for A2-level English students. Tornado poke cards are a great independent, partner or guided reading group comprehension activity. My students love the poke card process and enjoy checking each other when they answer questions. The poke cards are self checking. Students will answer the question by selecting one of three choices. Using a pencil, straw, or pipe cleaner, students will poke through the hole to choose their answer. The correct answer will have a mark above or around the hole. The poking process quickly engages the students and provides immediate feedback to them. Cards have chapter titles on them for ease of organization.

~ Eve of the Emperor Penguin literature unit can be used with a guided reading group or as a whole class novel study. ~ Questions use higher level thinking skills. Fact sheets are included. Students can research Antarctica and penguins prior to reading the book. ~ I use this unit with one of my guided reading groups.
