Engaging Beginning of the Year Activity:

Students will be complete an engaging introduction to fifth grade Social Studies standards. They can work with a partner or a team or by themselves to answer questions focused on four social studies topics: history, civics & government, geography, and economics. These questions will help students show their previous knowledge concerning 5th grade social studies. This activity is a more engaging than a pre-test.

Teachers can choose to have students check their work after they finish each challenge in order to earn parts of a puzzle. Completed puzzles could be turned in for prizes. There is also a completed prize card provided.

Students can work at their own pace as teachers have topic labels which can be displayed throughout the classroom to show students where to find their next challenge.

When the challenge is complete, students can complete follow up questions to review the Beginning of the Year Escape Room. These could be used as written assignments or to lead class discussion.

Glimmers, which are the opposite of triggers are those moments of pure joy and serenity that light up their lives. I use the materials to share and practice glimmers with my students & after just 3 days back the kids have already started using the term "glimmer" when something brings them joy!

The word Glimmers originates from Deb Dana, LCSW, psychotherapist, and author who coined the term. Glimmers which is the opposite of a trigger are those fleeting instances that bring us warmth and peace, offering a profound positive impact on our mental health. In the French classroom, it can be difficult to find new and engaging ways to grab the attention of our students without falling back on the old standards of 'les mains sur la tete...'

I keep a list of new and fun ways of getting students attention in my notes on my phone and try them out with my students. I love it when they get to the point that they spontaneously answer back.

Students will color their answers to share all about themselves: their families, pets & talents, and their favorite foods, school subjects, and activities. Get students having fun and getting comfortable with their surroundings and peers from the very first day!

Directions:

1. Print the six Station Pages in color. Laminate for reuse!
2. Print the All About Me page in black & white for EACH student participating.

4. Hand out the All About Me worksheet to each student.
5. Instruct students to visit each station in whatever order they want. Match the station number with the number on their black & white coloring sheet. Tell students to read the choices on the Station Pages. Color the doodles on the All About Me coloring page using the colors associated with the answers.
6. EXAMPLE: On the Tell Us About Your Family Members Station Page, students may color the doodles green, purple, and blue if those statements are true.

• The idea is that science always searches for the truth. Just because most people believe something, or for our whole lives we thought something was true doesn’t necessarily mean it is.
