5th Grade en Français Centers (by rating)

Flip Card decks are so handy for the classroom. I use them in small group work to assess and teach specific sounds, combinations of CV sounds, and to decode words together. The large format cards are great for my Grade 1 students as we can do a lot of whole class instruction and the students have so much fun coming up to the front of the class to come up with the 'really hard' CV combinations for their peers to read out loud.

Use the smaller sets for learning centres, individual work, and pair work as your students get familiar with their phonological awareness and phonemic awareness. My students happen to love 'testing' each other by flipping the cards, saying the sound, and then waiting as their 'students' write what they think is the correct letter on their whiteboards!

We love them so much as we can sneak in a little decoding and Science of Reading whenever we get a minute or two of time to fill.

Who can use this resource:

Any French educator who is wanting to practice, assess, and deepen their students understanding of sound work in French. This item is suitable for French Immersion, Core French, and French instruction at any level. Students in the Core French environment can benefit from using these sets independently for writing assignments and group activities. Immersion teachers will find these flip cards useful for any students from Grades 1 to 4 who need an extra boost to building a stronger phonological awareness and phonemic awareness. This coincides beautifully with the 'Heggerty type' approach to French Instruction being introduced in many provinces in Canada.

French Dots and Boxes Game - PRENDRE - PRESENT TENSE - No prep printable

An easy and fun no-prep game that will elicit a lot of exposure and pronunciation for the target vocabulary and grammar when teaching present tense PRENDRE with and without negation. This is a one-page dots & boxes game including directions. This game could be laminated and used repeatedly with dry-erase markers or played on an iPad with annotation/whiteboard tools.

Objective: Complete more boxes than your component. Each player draws lines using a different color. On your turn, make a horizontal or vertical line from one dot to another. Say the verbs on either side of the line you drew. If you complete a box on your turn, draw an X in the box using your color. Once all of the boxes have been completed, count to see who got the most. Writing prompts are the fast and easy No-Prep way of adding to your K-2 writing program. Aligned with the Science of Reading, students engage decoding and encoding skills. The vocabulary used in this resource follows a progression recommended by many school boards and is in lock step with what is being promoted by IDAPEL and ONLit websites for teaching French language in today's classrooms.

Once you have a grasp on all the simple sounds in French, the magic happens when you get students writing. They don't even notice that all the words used are from their very own memory banks and are all decodable words from past lessons.

Who can use this resource:

Teachers who are just getting accustomed to using strategies from the Science of Reading can use these simple texts to open up independent practice, small group evaluation, or up on a digital screen for whole group instruction and reading practice.

Make a set and send them home with students to build fluency in writing and confidence in writing strategies.

The prompts are designed to offer many variations for students to use their imaginations and to build confidence in their own writing.

Correction sheet is handy for use with a substitute as they can confidently assess students and command the lesson even when they are not assured of their French skills.

What grade level:

I personally use these texts with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in French Immersion. I feel confident that students from K-3 will find these most useful and teachers can come back to the texts with any students who may be experiencing challenges in their French writing skills. Core French teachers will be sure to add the resource to their repertoire for Grades 4 to 6 as they learn to read and write at the Junior level.

Science of Reading:

These prompts are aligned with sounds being taught in any Science of Reading aligned curriculum. They are set up for student success based on the research for increasing writing proficiency and building student confidence in the classroom!

Once you have established the strategies for identifying sounds, initial sounds, and blending sounds, segmenting sounds, students will be able to use these self-driven passages on their own. What a great way to build learning autonomy!

French Number Lines are not always easy to find to fit the tone and feeling of your classroom! I have developed this number line with simple font and easy to read numbers and words so that your students can get started on reading their numbers together. This bright coloured French Number Line will look great in your classroom whether you are just starting out or if you need a fresh new look part-way through the year!

What to expect:

-Numerical bubble with one number in each circle

-numbers 1 to 100 (with an extra bubble with '0' in it for use if you choose)*

*Please note the font I chose does not have an 'accent aigu' so you will have to add it in your own hand.

I have added this number line to my classroom and the students started organically using it whenever a number comes up in conversation. We have a clear gateway to practice from any number and we count forward and backward depending on the whim of the day. Students love to be the one to choose our number of the day and we get counting!

French Dots and Boxes Game - ATTENDRE - PRESENT TENSE - No prep printable

An easy and fun no-prep game that will elicit a lot of exposure and pronunciation for the target vocabulary and grammar when teaching present tense ATTENDRE with and without negation. This is a one-page dots & boxes game including directions. This game could be laminated and used repeatedly with dry-erase markers or played on an iPad with annotation/whiteboard tools.

Objective: Complete more boxes than your component. Each player draws lines using a different color. On your turn, make a horizontal or vertical line from one dot to another. Say the verbs on either side of the line you drew. If you complete a box on your turn, draw an X in the box using your color. Once all of the boxes have been completed, count to see who got the most. Make a few copies of each text and insert into clear pockets to create a quick and easy reading centre; arrange a table with four copies to create a quiet reading group; use one-on-one with your students to assess reading levels, to gain insights to their decoding skills, and to inform your upcoming lesson plans. Who can use this resource:

Teachers who are just getting accustomed to using strategies from the Science of Reading can use these simple texts to open up independent practice, small group evaluation, or up on a digital screen for whole group instruction and reading practice.

Make a set and send them home with students to build fluency in reading and confidence in reading strategies.

Texts are designed to build a number of common French sounds and get more challenging as they go on.

Correction sheet is handy for use with a substitute as they can confidently assess students and command the lesson even when they are not assured of their French skills.

What grade level:

I personally use these texts with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in French Immersion. I feel confident that students from K-3 will find these most useful and teachers can come back to the texts with any students who may be experiencing challenges in their French reading skills. Core French teachers will be sure to add the resource to their repertoire for Grades 4 to 6 as they learn to read and write at the Junior level.

French Science of Reading STARTER KIT Activity Bundle is a combination of Science of Reading aligned activities that I have created, designed, and classroom tested to bring you the best of what's in store. Do you get tired of looking for French Immersion resources only to find that there is too much or not enough?

I have bundled 7 fantastic resources that can help set you up for group work, paper packets, and centre activities so you can quickly get your students started. And the best part? You can start any time in the school year!

What's in the Bundle?

1. Decodable Sentence Strips that are ideal for hands-on learning. Students use the resource in clear folders and write out the phonemes, decode, and write out the sentences all on their own

2. French Phoneme Activity pads are sheets to print out, insert into clear pockets (or laminate) and students form blended sounds using CV sounds available on the side. Students start with /a/ and blend each consonant by saying the sound, tapping the sound, mapping the sound, and writing the sound. Excellent early practice for those just getting started with the Science of Reading

3. French Phonics Alphabet activity sheets are designed to get that each sound of the alphabet familiarized and into the daily lexicon of each student. This can be used as a whole group instruction activity prior to being given out. The students could each get a booklet for doing each sound as the year progresses, for morning work packets, or this could be used for extension activities for early finishers.

4. Decodable Texts are the first set of texts that focus on early sound patterns for those setting out to learn the phonemes in French. A great way to start out for K-2 Immersion students that are just getting used to French sounds. These texts include a target sound, a few heart words, a small text, and comprehension questions.

5. French Phonics Screener is my most downloaded item in my store and this full version will take you from Kindergarten all the way to the Grade 2 level in French Immersion as it includes complex sounds, complex vowels, and all the blended sounds as well. A comprehensive screening tool that take a few minutes per students so you know right at the beginning of the year, where you need to focus your lesson planning!

6. Pyramid Reading Cards 1 are a set of early reading sounds that will get your students excited and motivated to embark on the world of reading. Each card has one repeating sentence that students get to practice from top to bottom. My students love to do these cards in pairs as they sit elbow to elbow, knee to knee to read to a buddy.

7. Large Phonics Flash Cards are a MUST in the Science of Reading classroom. Once your students are able to distinguish sounds, they are asking to put the grapheme to the phoneme! So here you go. Large print. Easy font. Easy print. The letters are positioned for easy stacking so you can hang on a ring and flip pages quickly. Students LOVE to be the Mini-prof when it's their turn to try to stump their classmates. Once you have the single sounds down, it's time to blend. Printing on different coloured paper and laminated will help cards to last year after year!

This beefy 125+ page unit on weather and seasons is perfect for your older Core French students who might not have had the luxury of learning this vocabulary and these concepts when they were supposed to. This product (and my other Core French products) are built for exactly that demographic: middle school kids who are too old and "too mature" (so they think!) to be learning these babyish concepts.
