Decodable Reading Activity packet includes a variety of activites for French teachers. Quick and simple K-2 reading fluency activities that are decodable and aligned with the Science of Reading. Fun and engaging French resource targeting those learning in the French Immersion, Core French, or modern language programs. Build a strong foundation in French language with educational resources specifically designed with your students in mind.

As I got into using these decodable reading passages in class, the students guided me to stretching out the resource even more to create a cute little packet for them to do a lot of the work on their own.

What's in the pack?

There are 4 original texts that explore complex sounds in French

Target sounds include AN/EN, ON, OU, OI

Text 1: Blanche

-3 variations: a) text with decodable and heart words with comprehension questions with the target sound; b) text with decodable passage with writing lines so students can encode, write responses, or practice writing target words; c) decodable text with target sound with a box provided for students to create a picture to show comprehension (we do picture and label for beginner writers).

Text 2: L'hérisson Tonton

-le son ON

-3 variations: a) text with decodable and heart words with comprehension questions with the target sound; b) text with decodable passage with writing lines so students can encode, write responses, or practice writing target words; c) decodable text with target sound with a box provided for students to create a picture to show comprehension (we do picture and label for beginner writers).

Text 3: Lou le hibou

-3 variations: a) text with decodable and heart words with comprehension questions with the target sound; b) text with decodable passage with writing lines so students can encode, write responses, or practice writing target words; c) decodable text with target sound with a box provided for students to create a picture to show comprehension (we do picture and label for beginner writers).

Text 4: Le poisson Éloi

-le son OI

-3 variations: a) text with decodable and heart words with comprehension questions with the target sound; b) text with decodable passage with writing lines so students can encode, write responses, or practice writing target words; c) decodable text with target sound with a box provided for students to create a picture to show comprehension (we do picture and label for beginner writers).

How we use this in class:

My students now know that we read the passage first together as a group. We decode. We explore. We segment words. Blend them all so we are confident.

Next, we do activities with the sound blends themselves. Using a highlighter, students race to find all the target sound words in the text. I don’t know about you but my student LOVE highlighters! After that, students used the lined window to write all the target sound words so they’re sure they have them all. Then, we do a little exercise where we try to explain what happened in the story in as few words as possible.

The very last step is to draw a picture of what is happening in the text. Students can do most or all this activity pack on their own in the Grade One and Grade Two Immersion setting. It’s a great way to have them build confidence all while giving you the time to work with small groups at the back of your class!

Who can use this resource:

Teachers who are just getting accustomed to using strategies from the Science of Reading can use these simple texts to open up independent practice, small group evaluation, or up on a digital screen for whole group instruction and reading practice.

Make a set and send them home with students to build fluency in reading and confidence in reading strategies.

Texts are designed to build a number of common French sounds and get more challenging as they go on.

Correction sheet is handy for use with a substitute as they can confidently assess students and command the lesson even when they are not assured of their French skills.

What grade level:

I personally use these texts with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in French Immersion. I feel confident that students from K-3 will find these most useful and teachers can come back to the texts with any students who may be experiencing challenges in their French reading skills. Core French teachers will be sure to add the resource to their repertoire for Grades 4 to 6 as they learn to read and write at the Junior level.

Science of Reading:

These texts are aligned with sounds being taught in any Science of Reading aligned curriculum. They are set up for student success based on the research for increasing reading fluency and building student confidence in the classroom!

Once you have established the strategies for identifying sounds, initial sounds, and blending sounds, segmenting sounds, students will be able to use these self-driven passages on their own. What a great way to build learning autonomy!

Writing prompts are the fast and easy No-Prep way of adding to your K-2 writing program. Aligned with the Science of Reading, students engage decoding and encoding skills. The vocabulary used in this resource follows a progression recommended by many school boards and is in lock step with what is being promoted by IDAPEL and ONLit websites for teaching French language in today's classrooms.

Once you have a grasp on all the simple sounds in French, the magic happens when you get students writing. They don't even notice that all the words used are from their very own memory banks and are all decodable words from past lessons.

Who can use this resource:

Teachers who are just getting accustomed to using strategies from the Science of Reading can use these simple texts to open up independent practice, small group evaluation, or up on a digital screen for whole group instruction and reading practice.

Make a set and send them home with students to build fluency in writing and confidence in writing strategies.

The prompts are designed to offer many variations for students to use their imaginations and to build confidence in their own writing.

Correction sheet is handy for use with a substitute as they can confidently assess students and command the lesson even when they are not assured of their French skills.

What grade level:

I personally use these texts with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in French Immersion. I feel confident that students from K-3 will find these most useful and teachers can come back to the texts with any students who may be experiencing challenges in their French writing skills. Core French teachers will be sure to add the resource to their repertoire for Grades 4 to 6 as they learn to read and write at the Junior level.

Science of Reading:

These prompts are aligned with sounds being taught in any Science of Reading aligned curriculum. They are set up for student success based on the research for increasing writing proficiency and building student confidence in the classroom!

Once you have established the strategies for identifying sounds, initial sounds, and blending sounds, segmenting sounds, students will be able to use these self-driven passages on their own. What a great way to build learning autonomy!

French Science of Reading STARTER KIT Activity Bundle is a combination of Science of Reading aligned activities that I have created, designed, and classroom tested to bring you the best of what's in store. What's in the Bundle?

1. Decodable Sentence Strips that are ideal for hands-on learning. Students use the resource in clear folders and write out the phonemes, decode, and write out the sentences all on their own

2. French Phoneme Activity pads are sheets to print out, insert into clear pockets (or laminate) and students form blended sounds using CV sounds available on the side. Students start with /a/ and blend each consonant by saying the sound, tapping the sound, mapping the sound, and writing the sound. Excellent early practice for those just getting started with the Science of Reading

3. French Phonics Alphabet activity sheets are designed to get that each sound of the alphabet familiarized and into the daily lexicon of each student. This can be used as a whole group instruction activity prior to being given out. The students could each get a booklet for doing each sound as the year progresses, for morning work packets, or this could be used for extension activities for early finishers.

4. Decodable Texts are the first set of texts that focus on early sound patterns for those setting out to learn the phonemes in French. A great way to start out for K-2 Immersion students that are just getting used to French sounds. These texts include a target sound, a few heart words, a small text, and comprehension questions.

5. French Phonics Screener is my most downloaded item in my store and this full version will take you from Kindergarten all the way to the Grade 2 level in French Immersion as it includes complex sounds, complex vowels, and all the blended sounds as well. A comprehensive screening tool that take a few minutes per students so you know right at the beginning of the year, where you need to focus your lesson planning!

6. Pyramid Reading Cards 1 are a set of early reading sounds that will get your students excited and motivated to embark on the world of reading. Each card has one repeating sentence that students get to practice from top to bottom. My students love to do these cards in pairs as they sit elbow to elbow, knee to knee to read to a buddy.

7. Large Phonics Flash Cards are a MUST in the Science of Reading classroom. Once your students are able to distinguish sounds, they are asking to put the grapheme to the phoneme! So here you go. Large print. Easy font. Easy print. The letters are positioned for easy stacking so you can hang on a ring and flip pages quickly. Students LOVE to be the Mini-prof when it's their turn to try to stump their classmates. Once you have the single sounds down, it's time to blend. Printing on different coloured paper and laminated will help cards to last year after year!
