These community-building activities and games are perfect for the first weeks of school! Students will use collaboration and teamwork which will build a positive learning community in your classroom. These activities are not just designed to be used only the first week of school but give the perfect opportunity to build friendships, and teamwork, and create a positive class culture. They could also be used for team building, recess, morning meetings, or SEL.

Help your students learn to collaborate. communicate, trust, and show mutual respect to others to be able to work well with others and be able to create a cohesive group of individuals working together for a common goal.

This team-building set comes with general objectives. Each activity comes with instructions you can modify. It also comes with processing questions to facilitate learning from the activities that you can discuss with your students.

3 Icebreakers

This ten-station All About Me-themed Gallery Walk will introduce a slice of humor into your first day or week of school! Students will get to know each other, you as teacher will get to know your students (and plus they will think you are SUPER cool).

What needs to be prepared?

• Print ONE set of station cards, and print one coloring sheet and answer recording sheet per student. You can also print the student and teacher instructions if you feel it's needed. This is a very printer-friendly product, as everything but the instructions are in black and white!
• Cut the 10 station cards in half, then display them on tables or walls or wherever you want to play the game.
• Hand out the coloring sheet and answer recording sheet to each student
• Read everyone the directions and have fun! (for a fun bonus make it a pizza party!)

How do we play?

Students visit each of the ten stations. They read the All About Me question and choose an answer. Then, they mark the answer on their recording sheet. Each answer correlates to a pizza ingredient. Once all stations are completed, students will have 10 ingredients total ( . . . and maybe some of them are grosser than others). These are the ingredients they use to draw and color their goofy pizza on the included coloring sheet.

Mystery At The Theme Park is a video based Escape Room activity that is played with a YouTube Video (approximately 20 minutes) and answers are submitted on a Google Form. Students will have to watch the video, listen to the story, and look at pictures to find clues to escape from the Theme Park in time. There are many different ways that you could play this game whether it is as a full class and you try to beat the clock, or in small groups where students can work together to solve the puzzles! The Prep to play this Escape Room is minimal-all you need is the video link and a copy of the Google Form for each group. I played this game with my Grade 6/7 class online and they LOVED it. I had students who were usually pretty quiet online take over and shine!

French This or That Activity - Ceci ou Cela French Icebreaker

This French ceci ou cela - this or that activity is perfect for back to school, end of the year, or anytime when everyone wants to have a little fun with French.

Use this "this or that" activity as a French speaking activity for partners or groups, as a whole-class activity you project for the entire class.

Alternatively, you can make this a moving around activity. Students start by standing in a big group. When the choices on the cards are read, they move to the side of the room that is associated with their choice (see the arrows on the cards). Those who can’t make up their mind or don’t have a preference remain in the center. Students will see all of the things that they have in common with their classmates and will likely learn some new vocabulary while they’re at it. This is a great back to school ice-breaker!

This activity requires no teacher prep once the set of cards is printed and cut out. If you don’t want to print, there’s a PDF with only one card per page that you can project and play as a whole class activity.

Directions:

• Display the Google Slide Story Starter OR print them out so students have different stories to choose from.
• Students will complete the engaging story starter by writing for 3 minutes.
• Students can use the picture provided to help guide them in their stories, or choose to take a different route and be creative on their own.
• Students will be split into groups of 4-6.
• Each student will present their story to their small group while practicing public speaking skills.

This interactive SEL classroom lesson provides fun and engagement for the entire class, while reminding them that everyone (including Disney characters!) uses growth mindset and gratitude in their roles - just as we should do!
