Reignite your students interest in reading and writing as they create a story with multiple paths and possible endings in MS Word, and then animate it using MS PowerPoint. Students get a chance to read each other’s work as they peer review it too.

This project based learning assignment gives students a fun way to express themselves using both English/Language arts skills along with technology.

This interactive story project is usually one of the lessons my students mention in their end-of-year reflection as one of their favorites. I hope your students enjoy it too!

Learning about Animation teaches students the history and basic concepts of animation prior to them creating their own animation utilizing Adobe Flash. Another animation program could be substituted, but would require some changes to the directions for those portions of the unit.

Students being by doing guided research about the history of animation and presenting their findings in a PowerPoint or Prezi. Next, they learn about the twelve principles of animation by completing a worksheet. There is also a quiz over this material. With this knowledge about animation, students are ready to start creating their own. A short lesson on basic animation in Adobe Flash with students first watching the teacher create a bouncing ball and then completing it themselves from written directions and a tutorial, followed by another practice hands-on activity to add to and reinforce skills, leads to the culminating activity of the unit – to create a cartoon using their skills in Adobe Flash.

The “Learning Adobe Illustrator” unit focuses on teaching novice students the basics of Adobe Illustrator through independent, project based learning. Students utilize a variety of resources to assist them in their hands-on learning of the program at their own pace. The “About Me” project allows students individual expression and creativity while learning the basic tools in the program. It also includes links to tutorials they can use as they need to complete the lesson. Next, students do three short “practice” lessons that allow them to expand their skills. In this lesson, students explore the field of fashion design, using a digital notebook to compile their research and designs. In addition to teacher and student resources, the lesson includes a 22 page, editable digital notebook (Microsoft PowerPoint) which can also be shared via Google Drive and opened in Google Slides. Students can work through the lessons in the notebook at their own pace, or the teacher can assign specific lessons for each class period. Students learn fashion terminology, clothing and fashion industry trends and influences, elements of art and design in fashion, color choices, and the types of fabrics and materials used in fashions. They also create a design portfolio in the notebook, using online resources, of fashions of interest to them, creating their own “fashion line”. Additionally, they explore careers in the field, reflect on their own personal style choices and summarize their learning in the lesson.

This is a great activity for a career exploration class, Principles of Arts, A/V Technology & Communications class, Family & Consumer Sciences, Fashion Design, or any technology class. This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in high school as well.

In this lesson, students learn more about what makes an effective infographic as they analyze existing infographics and then create their own. Included with the lesson is a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation for whole class instruction (editable) to learn about infographics and analyze them as a class. Infographics with discussion questions are included in the PowerPoint. Next, students choose a topic of interest, research their topic and then create an infographic using Piktochart (www.piktochart.com), a free Web 2.0 tool that does not require download. The Design & Build a Treehouse STEM Project utilizes allows students to build skills utilizing the engineering design process and CAD along with skills in Internet research, reading, writing and critical thinking. In these projects, students research information about treehouse design as well as utilizing math skills. They create a scale model drawing of a treehouse individually using Sketchup (CAD) and brainstorm with their team to determine the best design from their group to actually build a model using specific provided materials that they “purchase” using a set budget. The goal is to build a safe, attractive treehouse within the specified constraints and within their budget. They present their projects to the class, critiquing the other groups. Finally, they reflect on their learning and the dynamics of their team to complete the project.

Editable (modifiable) files are included so that teachers can modify the supply list to suit the materials they have available and to adapt the project if they choose. The project was created for grades 7-8 but could easily be adapted for younger or older students.

Materials Required

• Access to computers for each student (or pair of students) with Internet and MS Word (or Google Docs), Sketchup Free (web based free CAD program)
• Materials for each group to build model treehouse: craft (popsicle) sticks, toothpicks, string, balsa wood, cardboard (full list is included with the project and can be modified)
• White glue
• X-acto knives, scissors, rulers and cutting mats
• Safety goggles (optional but highly recommended)

The “What Will My Car Cost?” project allows students to build skills in Internet research and critical thinking as they research costs for a car and then compute and compare payment options using Microsoft Excel. First, students research the cost for two car options (one used and one new) and then compare financing and payment options for these using formulas in Microsoft Excel. The step-by-step directions were created for Microsoft Excel 2016, but could easily be used with earlier versions of the software. Editable templates and samples are provided for both Microsoft Excel 2016 and earlier versions (2007-2013).

Creating an Animated Gif in Adobe Photoshop is a project for students with basic knowledge of some of the common Adobe Photoshop commands. The project includes step-by-step instructions to guide students through the project of turning photos or clip art into an animated Gif. A sample project is provided for reference in both .psd (Photoshop format) and as a finished .gif.

This is a fun activity that shows students some additional features in Adobe Photoshop while improving their skills with basic commands. Created for an 8th grade Information Technology class, this project would be suitable for students in grades 6-12.

This project lets students learn about the engineering and design of ocean liners and cruise ships as they research and design one with their team. After introducing the lesson with a short video (link included in resources), students work with their team to research information about the design and engineering involved in ship building from early times, including the Titanic, through the modern cruise ships of today. Then, they brainstorm together to determine what features they would include in their own “ship of dreams”. Next, they plan their design and create their own modern cruise ship to scale in Sketchup (a free CAD software program, download available at: https://www.sketchup.com/download ). Finally, they build a model of their ship using recycled materials, following the Engineering Design Process with their team. After completing their ship, students present their project to the class and explain their design choices. Finally, students reflect on and summarize their learning with short answers to questions about the experience and what they learned.

The “Learning MS PowerPoint” Beginner Lessons start students with no previous knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint on a path of learning the most important and frequently used commands to give them a quick start.

Each lesson has a short, step-by-step tutorial that includes screenshots to walk students through the new tools they will use in the lesson. Then, they are given a creative task to solve, using those skills to create a presentation. There are four lessons, each taking no more than two (50 minute) class periods.

Versions of the lesson are included for MS PowerPoint 2013/2016, and Office 365 (MS PowerPoint 2019).

This lesson was created for middle school students (grades 6-8) but could also be used for upper elementary or high school students.

This lesson is great for distance learning/remote learning. You can upload it to your school's learning management system (Google Classroom, Edmodo, Canvas, etc.) or share with students via Google Drive.
