This unit connects learning with technology to English Language Arts/Reading. This lesson teaches students about idioms and guides them through using shapes and other graphic features in Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides to create an idiom. Also included are a PowerPoint presentation to introduce the lesson, a step-by-step tutorial of the features of Microsoft PowerPoint and Google Slides needed to create the project, and a sample project.

The “Excelling with Excel” Intermediate Activities let students continue their learning with Microsoft Excel to include more intermediate commands. This lesson assumes student already have beginner skills with Microsoft Excel including knowing these basic commands: entering and editing information, basic cell and text formatting, changing column width, creating a basic formula (SUM, AVERAGE, basic math), adding a row or column, changing page settings, printing, and creating a basic chart/graph. In this lesson, students learn interesting facts about the Titanic disaster as they complete several projects including a WebQuest (Internet Scavenger Hunt) to answer questions about the topic.    A complete answer key is provided for the WebQuest for easy grading, along with resources for both teachers and students.  The student questions are included in both a print version and a digital (editable) version to make it easy for students to complete the lesson digitally or on paper.  Also included with this lesson is a word search puzzle that includes an answer key.  Additionally, a timeline project is included, allowing students to utilize the Web 2.0 tool, Tiki-Toki (free, no download needed). 

This lesson is intended to be an introduction to the topic and was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in upper elementary or high school as well.  This cross-curricular lesson combines social studies/history with technology and is also a great lesson to leave for a substitute teacher!

What student doesn't love games – especially video games! In this lesson, students learn more about the origin and history of video games. Students choose a time period in history from a provided list, research that era, and then choose the software they will use to showcase their research. Students can choose to create a presentation, a brochure, or a video using Web 2.0 tools such as Prezi, Adobe Spark, eMaze, Canva, etc. (free, no download needed) or by using Microsoft Office or Google Apps. A full list of software/technology options is listed in the student lesson instructions and includes links to tutorials. For classrooms with limited technology, this lesson can be completed with students working in pairs or small groups. The completed presentations can be shared with the rest of the class if the teacher chooses.

This is a great activity for a social studies or history class, career exploration class, Principles of Arts, A/V Technology & Communications class, or any technology class. This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in high school as well.

No download is required to use Microsoft Sway (www.sway.com - a free product), making it easy for teachers who are not able to download software on classroom computers to still give their students a choice in learning.

In this lesson, students are provided with a quick tutorial, as well as links to other resources to help them with their project. The tutorial is intended to help students get started with the program and then use the resources within the program to refine their creations. Students create an animated video presentation after researching their choice of a topic relevant to Westward Expansion of the United States from a list provided with the assignment. They use that information along with animation, themes and formatting supplied in Microsoft Sway, plus pictures and Internet resources they add, to create a finished animated presentation that explains the topic and adds their own opinions and insights to it.

The project was created for grades 7-8 but could easily be used with upper elementary or high school students. This project is a great addition to a history unit on westward expansion in the United States.
