❖ ESL - ELL Taboo Game, Countries and Cities ❖

Playing TABOO in English is a great way to get ESL students to speak English and learn a lot of new vocabulary. This game focuses on different cities and countries around the world. It is simple to modify and use with beginners and advanced students alike. Advanced students try to get teammates to guess the word at the top of the card without saying any of the "taboo" words listed below. Beginner students can still play, but they should be allowed to use the "taboo" words to help learn new vocabulary and build sentences in English.

This ESL Taboo game includes the following:

40 Taboo game cards to print, cut out and laminate if possible

Color and black and white versions included

How to play

Object of the game:

One player tries to get his teammate to guess the word at the top of a card. The player must give clues, but he can't use any of the Taboo words in his description. The taboo words are written beneath the word at the top of the card. Teams score points for each word successfully guessed. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Beginner students should be allowed to use the TABOO words printed on the cards. This will encourage them to use new vocabulary and will help them in forming sentences to use as clues.

Students will go beyond the mere rote memorization of these themes, but will explore and apply each of these themes to an eye opening example found in the REAL WORLD; whether it be a tribal man’s adaptive ability to hold his breath for an extended amount of time while deep sea hunting, to the ancient Roman’s impressive engineering skills in constructing the famous waterway system known as the aqueducts.

The Slide Presentation will guide your students through an exciting journey of the five themes. This interactive lesson is designed to teach the concepts, and then quiz students of their understanding of each theme, and finally a more comprehensive assessment takes place at the end of the lesson.

This Bundle of resources uses the Odd One Out format to review geographical facts related to North and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia and Oceania. From a list of 4 items, students will determine which item does not belong and then how the other 3 are related. Included is 20 Placards, an answer document, and an answer key.

This is a fun way to have students learn the process of how a Bill becomes a Law. Students will work together with their teams to complete the group reading assignment, then students will move on to the instruction sheet that gives them the steps they need to take to complete the hexagon puzzle showing the law-making process. This lesson includes a detailed teacher guide that includes the introduction, procedure, and closure, etc.

A culminating activity for students to work in groups to revisit what they learned throughout the year. Students will be able to see what they have accomplished and how much they have learned while having fun with their classmates through this game. This is designed for an end-of-year activity; however, the concept can be used every grading period (6-weeks, 4 quarters, semesters, etc) for review.
