How does it work?

Your students have worked hard throughout the unit following the Steve Harmon trial and today, their knowledge will be tested with an escape room covering the characters, plot, vocabulary, and elements of Monster.

• Guess Who: In the first task, students must match each character from Monster with their description by drawing a line connecting them. Letters not intersected by these lines will form their first code word.
• Criss Cross: In the second task, students must complete a crossword puzzle about major plot points, characters, setting, and quotes from the novel. Circled letters within the crossword, once unscrambled, reveal their second code.
• Legal Lingo: In the third task, students must complete fill-in-the-blank sentences using vocabulary words from the novel. Shaded letters within the answers, once unscrambled, reveal the third code.
• Plot Thickens: In the fourth task, students must answer challenging multiple choice questions about the novel. Letters of the correct answers reveal the fourth code.
• Jig Saw Quote: In the fifth and final task, students must assemble a jig saw puzzle that, once assembled correctly, reveals a notable quote from Monster. They must bring this quote to you in order to escape!

In this product, The Man Who Named the Clouds is read and reviewed. The graphic novel, Squished - The Graphic Novel by Megan Wagner Lloyd and Michelle Mee Mutter is great for children ages 9 - 15 years old, as they can relate with the characters. This is a book about friendship, getting along with siblings, developing interests, finding oneself, accepting and adjusting to change, starting a new school, moving to a new place, effective communication, being a good friend, being different from others and embracing those differences, having a big family and finding balance within that family. Comprehension questions and multiple choice questions are provided in this product and are separated by the books 13 chapters. An answer key is provided at the end of the product for questions asked in each of the 13 chapters.

The comprehension questions in this product relate with the text as well as students own experiences. Vocabulary words, their meanings, and a few example sentences are presented in the product. As the book is being read aloud, as a chapter comes to an end, or as students are reading the book or after the book has been read, students can answer the comprehension questions in this packet.

As students are learning the ULTIMATE 260 - 4th grade sight words in this product, they will be provided with each word, an example of the word used in a sentence, and the opportunity to make up a sentence themselves using the word. I find that with my students who are Deaf/hard of hearing/ELL, when they make up sentences using each newly learned sight word, it helps them to remember how to spell the word, the meaning, and how it is used. My students love booklets of any kind that they can refer back to. Once they have come up with their sentences, they can include pictures that they print and cut out, draw pictures freehand, or find pictures in a magazine that they can add to each page of the 4th grade sight word booklet that matches each sentence they come up with. This gives students the opportunity to connect what they are learning about in the classroom with their own personal interests. This booklet is rather lengthy, so instead of printing it out, you can display it for the entire class to see as well. This booklet is perfect for students that are on grade level as well as students who require instructional information to be adapted.

The book, Real Friends by Shannon Hale and Leuyen Pham is great for children ages 7 - 13 years old, as they can relate with Shannon, the friends she makes along the way, the friendships she struggles to maintain, the lack of self confidence she has and she becomes more confident along the way, learning that you can have more than one friend, the importance of friendship, how to handle stressful situations, anxiety, conflict, and bullying. Students will follow Shannon along as she figures out where to fit in at home and in school. The comprehension questions in this product relate with the text as well as students own experiences. Vocabulary words, their meanings, and example sentences are presented in the packet. Students can also write vocabulary words in sentences.
