Are you looking for an introduction lesson for teaching main idea? Are your students struggling with main idea and supporting details or just Listening skills in general? The secret to getting the main idea is to teach the student to identify the topic, and then teach the student to identify what the purpose of the narrative was (Entertain/ Inform/ Persuade/ Instruct).
This is A 36 card/slide Lesson with 36 multiple choice prompts and 36 open-ended prompts which allow you to determine if the student can grasp the main idea. Narratives get progressively more complex as the student moves through the cards. A 4 page PDF assessment in included.
The cards work well with any students grades 6-10 or best when used with students who have mild cognitive delays yet basic language skills. An independent lesson will take about 30 minutes however if you are using it as a teaching tool during instruction the lesson can easily fill 60 minutes with breaks in between for group discussion.

This is a great sheet for following directions and coming up with a strategy to follow those directions. It checks reading comprehension and knowing left and right as well. I use it with 6th graders to show how important carefully following directions can be. It could easily be used with younger grades or possibly older grades as well.

DESCRIPTION
Students always need additional support in mastering the skill of inferencing. You can use these two sets of 16 Freak The Mighty Multiple-Choice Inference Task Cards to help students practice making inferences.
▶️ Inference Task Cards
✅ The first set of 16 Inference Task Cards consists of a short selection/passage from the book followed by an inference-based question. There are four multiple choice answers choices that students choose from. Students read the passage and choose the correct answer. Students will need to pay close attention to details to choose the correct answer. The inference questions are centered around character traits, character relationships, and situations.
✅ A Student Answer Sheet is included for students to write their answers.
✅ The second set of 16 Inference Task Cards are the actual “Answer Key” set of the first set of Task Cards. The Answer Key set of Task Cards highlight the correct multiple-choice answers in the color red and highlights relevant evidence that supports the correct answers in the color yellow.
✅ This is engaging practice for your students as it is perfect for mini-lessons, whole class instruction, cooperative learning, intervention groups, literacy centers, and small group instruction.
▶️ Test Format Version (Print and Digital)
✅ Also included is a "Test Format" version of the Inference Task Cards (same passages in the Task Cards). This includes an ANSWER KEY as well! The test consists of 16 multiple-choice inference questions.
▶️ Inference Graphic Organizer (Print and Digital)
✅ One-page Three-Column Graphic Organizer Chart that requires students to make evidence-based inferences. Students record the following information in the Inference Graphic Organizer: Information from the text, their own Prior/Background Knowledge, and Inferences. This is a great scaffolding tool for ELL and Special Ed students.
▶️ Inference Bookmarks
✅ These bookmarks include sentence stems consistent with making inferences. Students can reference these inference stems to stimulate their thinking, increase comprehension, and actively engage in reading and discussion. Students can also use these inference stems in their writing! These bookmarks can be used to support reading comprehension in any text.
Suggestions on how you can use the Multiple-Choice Inference Task Cards:
⭐ Quiz or Test - You can make a copy of the set of Task Cards and distribute to each student as a quiz or test. You, as the teacher , can then select the Task Card Inference question that students performed the lowest on and use that to review and develop/modify your instruction.
⭐ Small Group Instruction - You can have students engage in small group instruction where you provide additional support on the skill of inferencing. These Inference Task Cards will support that type of instruction. You can have all students in small groups practice with the same inference task card question number or you can distribute 1-2 Task Cards to each student to practice, then review.
⭐ Mini Lesson - You can load these Inference Task Cards on the Smartboard and use them to demonstrate how to make an inference. They can also be used to discuss the importance of details and how they are used to encourage inferential thinking. You can even use these Task Cards to discuss the difference between relevant details and irrelevant details. Finally, you can use these Inference Task Cards during the guided practice portion of your lesson.
⭐ Formative Assessment / Exit Slips - These Inference Task Cards make a great, quick formative assessment! You can easily check for understanding by distributing 1-2 Task Cards to each student to complete. You can circulate the room to do a "Quick Check" to see if students "Got it." You can also use these Task Cards as Exit Slips by distributing 1-2 Task Cards to each student to complete and hand in to you before they leave.
⭐ Partner Study - You can have students pair up and “test each other.” Partners not only ask each other to choose the correct multiple-choice answer, but to highlight or underline specific details in the selection/passage to support their inference-based answer. The Answer Key set of Task Cards are helpful in the sense that students can take ownership of reviewing the correct answers and sharing that with their partners**.**
⭐ Test Prep Review - You can use these Task Cards to review how to answer multiple-choice questions. You can also use these cards to teach students a variety of multiple-choice strategies (process of elimination, context clues, textual evidence, tone, etc.) to help them select the right answers to questions and aid comprehension.

By Mark Holmes
This story is also available as part of an eight story ebook, "Young Voices: Eight Short Stories of Courage & Resilience."
In the wake of the 9/11 tragedy, two seventh graders, Alex and Sarah, display remarkable resilience by choosing to help at their local community center instead of attending school. Through this experience, they learn valuable lessons about community, empathy, and the human capacity to overcome adversity. Alex finds solace in drawing, capturing the emotions around him, while Sarah uses storytelling to comfort younger children. Their actions not only aid in their personal coping but also bring hope to those around them. This story is a poignant exploration of young people finding strength and unity in the face of unspeakable tragedy.
There are thought provoking questions (and suggested answers) at the end of the story.

Bushcraft Battle Royale in Egypt: Geography, Survival, and Wildlife of the Egyptian Wilderness
By The Academic Architect
This product includes a reading passage detailing how someone could use bushcraft techniques to survive in the Egyptian Wilderness. Use the reading and the Battle Royale style activity to teach about Bushcraft and Primitive Survival Techniques while reinforcing the geography of Egypt. Any fan of fortnite or other Battle Royale style video games will love this assignment! But even the students who don't play fortnite will enjoy making their battle royale survival plan. If you are looking for a more general bushcraft assignment, check out this assignment.
I like to use this assignment as a follow-up to my lesson on the Geography of Egypt. I’ve found that the creativity that students use to design their own survival kit helps to anchor knowledge of the geography and animals of Egypt. One thing to be aware of is that your students will likely discuss hunting weapons, including firearms. If you or your school are sensitive to this kind of thing, make sure to set parameters beforehand. An easy way to do this is by telling students that they can only bring ancient weapons - or if they want a real challenge, they must make their own hunting weapons using tools and items in the natural world. I also allow my students to research other wildlife and plant life as they prepare their supply list, and we discuss ethical hunting practices before they begin.
If you want to add more time and rigor to this assignment, you can allow students to work on their checklists in pairs and set a weight limit on materials (I normally set a limit of 35 pounds for their 12 items). Then, have students research name brand items on their iPads to find their exact weight. Students can write the weight of each individual item in the circular bullet point to make sure they don’t go over the limit. This typically keeps students engaged for the entire class period. You can try setting a budget as well but this can sometimes make the assignment frustratingly difficult for some students. It all depends on the class, which is why these criteria are optional. I also like to have students share their survival kit at the end of class and vote on the person that they think would survive the longest.
