This activity is a collaborative way for students to work together in a book club and it works for any book. Students read the book at a rate decided by the club and respond daily to their reading.

Students use creativity to present the ideas going through the main character's mind during each section of the book. Students enthusiastically watch each groups poster fill up with thoughts.

Students also write questions over the sections they read. I used the questions my students wrote for future book clubs to answer rather than writing questions.

Are you looking for an introduction lesson for teaching main idea? Are your students struggling with main idea and supporting details or just Listening skills in general?  The secret to getting the main idea is to teach the student to identify the topic, and then teach the student to identify what the purpose of the narrative was (Entertain/ Inform/ Persuade/ Instruct).

This is A 36 card/slide Lesson with 36 multiple choice prompts and 36 open-ended prompts which allow you to determine if the student can grasp the main idea. Narratives get progressively more complex as the student moves through the cards. A 4 page PDF assessment in included.

The cards work well with any students grades 6-10 or best when used with students who have mild cognitive delays yet basic language skills. An independent lesson will take about 30 minutes however if you are using it as a teaching tool during instruction the lesson can easily fill 60 minutes with breaks in between for group discussion.

This is a great sheet for following directions and coming up with a strategy to follow those directions. It checks reading comprehension and knowing left and right as well. I use it with 6th graders to show how important carefully following directions can be. It could easily be used with younger grades or possibly older grades as well.

This is a detailed reading comprehension passage about The Battle of Puebla. It is designed for students in grades 3, 4, and 5 but grade 6 students can also use it.

The passage provides a detailed account of the historic Battle of Puebla, offering students a chance to understand the history of Cinco de Mayo. It not only narrates the events of the Battle of Puebla but also provides context and background, helping students understand the significance of this historic event.

To reinforce learning and assess comprehension, the passage is accompanied by 13 thought-provoking questions. These questions, a mix of written-response and multiple-choice formats, challenge students to recall details, draw inferences, and apply what they’ve learned from the passage.

To facilitate grading and discussion, answer keys are included.

This resource is versatile and can be adapted to various learning environments. It can be used for whole-class instruction, sparking lively discussions about the Battle of Puebla. Alternatively, it can be used in small group settings, promoting collaborative learning.
