What is a 90 Second Social Studies Assignment?

90 Second Social Studies Assignments introduce students to a large amount of information in a relatively short amount of time. The 90 second time limit serves as both a way to keep students on task, and to promote the idea of summarizing key details. 90 Second Social Studies Assignments can cover concepts, historical figures, landmarks, and events. 

Why does this assignment use Google Slides?

One of the issues with student presentations is the transition time between student presenters. When the presentations are all on the same google slide, transitions become seamless. Google Slides also enables students to work simultaneously on the assignment, and for teachers to observe edits and work in real time.

Students will do a close read of "Phenomenal Woman" by Maya Angelou and "All the Single Ladies" by Beyonce looking for the key ideas and details, as well as the themes of both pieces. Students will also be asked to compare and contrast both works. Comes complete with answer key.

Looking for a** Female Writers**-themed, engaging and informative reading comprehension activity for Women's History Month? This scavenger hunt is designed to help students practice skim reading, looking for context clues, and learn some useful vocabulary.

It’s perfect for EFL / ESL students at the B1/B2 level and can also be used for native English classes at grade levels 5 - 7. With low prep, just print and hang, it contains 10 reading passages about 10 of the most influential female writers in history.

The scavenger hunt is designed so that students have to revisit and reread the reading passages multiple times when looking for code words. This is a biography writing unit about one of the most famous victims of the Holocaust and young diarist during World War II, Anne Frank. The unit has been split into four separate lessons which will take students approximately 40-50 minutes each. The Google Slides activity is ideal for distance learning and perfect for students in 5th grade or 6th grade learning about World History, World War 2, or for Women's History Month.

The first lesson is interactive and involves students reading facts, and then sorting and ordering these facts into paragraphs. In the second lesson the children need to use these facts to type four paragraphs. Then, in the third lesson they need to choose the most important facts and incude these in an introduction; after this they need to answer several questions before typing up their conclusion. In the final lesson your class will need to check their draft paragraphs before typing up their work on to the template provided.

This Figurative Language Short Passage Set about Rosa Parks is a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. Use it during Women's History Month or any time of the year! Featuring Rosa Parks, this is a 216-word passage filled with 15 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! This figurative language passage set is rigorous, uses higher-level words and phrases, and in addition to merely identifying the different types, students will be asked to discuss the impact it has on the reader, as they’re asked to do on standardized testing. Simply print and go! There is truly no preparation needed, which is why this set is perfect to leave for sub plans, bell ringers, homework, test prep, review or assessment!

Activity:
Students can complete all three worksheets as part of a packet, but I suggest using one each day. If you teach allusion, alliteration, idiom, or onomatopoeia, you can ask students to include those in Task 2 where they will be asked to continue the passage using a similar writing style. I have left some blanks on the checklist for this very purpose.

Reflection:
The class can review the answers and comments as a whole group when the activity is complete. You’ll be surprised how much better they’ll get at figurative language after being exposed to some high-quality examples!

Celebrate Black History Month with this thoughtful, engaging lesson on overcoming obstacles in Maya Angelou's renowned poem, "Still I Rise."

This lesson plan on Angelou's poem can be used in a variety of ways throughout the school year. For instance, the lesson is the perfect jumpstart for your unit on slavery, Civil Rights, poetry, or Women's Rights in America. It can also be used as a stand-alone lesson to get your students to reflect upon and discuss overcoming their own personal obstacles. This can help motivate your students to try their best to get the message right by plotting the ordered pairs correctly and accurately.
