This package can be used in conjunction with the free iCell app (by Hudson Alpha), which is available for iPad and Android, as well as mobile devices. Note: the iPhone app is not as advanced as the iPad app as it only gives basic definitions of cell organelles. The app is a 3D interactive way for students to learn about plant and animal cells. You can move the cell around to see where the different cell organelles are located and click on the organelles to read basic, intermediate, or advanced, descriptions. I wish there were interactive programs like this when I had to learn about cells! This unit aligns with the Ontario Grade 8 Science curriculum. One way to use this package is have students use the app to explore the parts of an animal and a plant cell. After searching online for basic cell diagrams, I did not find any that looked similar to the app so I decided to draw a plant and animal cell in 3D to match the iCell app. The drawings match up to the cells used in the app. Students can look at the basic, intermediate, or advanced descriptions from the app and colour the cell using specific colours as identified in the handout. An additional set of questions is included to ensure students explore through each of the descriptions of the plant and animal cell. This project is great for the end of the year. That weird time between end of course tests and the school year end is challenging. The project is mostly self-paced and great for those days that you only see some classes throughout the day. Minimum materials are needed! 11x7 paper, lined, paper, the packet, and yarn!

Student will make a map, complete a packet, and write some journal entries on how they would survive if they were stranded on a deserted island.

Students are responsible for decorating the box and putting a creative scene inside that represents the parts of human skin. What is a diorama?

A diorama is a three-dimensional scene built to illustrate a topic. Dioramas are small scenes created with layers of materials. A diorama can be made out of a shoe box or similar box that includes a variety of information and pictures about a topic.

Students create a diorama by cutting, coloring, painting, and gluing pieces inside the box to create a model that shows a situation, such as a historical event or animals in their natural environment. Students can be encouraged to add real features such as grass, sand, sticks, etc.

The dioramas do not come with specific assembly instructions. Students should learn about the parts of the skin first, and use the pieces within this resource to creatively build their own unique diorama! This is a fun way for students to learn and get hands-on with the lesson/topic.

Prep is quick and easy... print the pieces on cardstock for durability and let your students explore the water as an enrichment activity to your lesson plan.
