Women during Great Depression: DBQs and Primary Sources * APUSH * US History*

By Christa Nonnemaker

This 22-page resource with 26 primary sources, 27 comprehension questions plus 2 DBQ prompts gives students a chance to identify the tensions for women between tradition and progress in the 1920s, along with the new opportunities. The first page includes Background, Notes on Primary Sources and Teacher Notes.

Here’s a chance for students to read documents and look at images that shed light on issues facing women during the Great Depression. These include newspaper pictures and articles about the difficulty of finding work, women's clubs, clothing advertisements, "wandering women", articles about women's need to be in the home, women's lack of equality in society as well as women's right and ability to hold jobs, photos of rural women, African-American women's activities and leisure activities, as well as excerpts from the Social Security Act and an ex-slave narrative. There are, of course, so many more documents and issues of the 1930s but these documents cover a broad range of what women experienced. Many of the political events of the time still minimized, or even excluded, women's input although sometimes women provided reflections, opinions and even participation when possible. Nonetheless, the included primary sources highlight many of the challenges of the era, although they also provide glimmers of progress during a troubled time.

Assign just one, a few or all of the sources depending on time constraints and student interest.

Primary sources include advertisements, photos, newspaper articles, excerpts and other documents. Each page of primary sources includes comprehension questions at the end in order for students to analyze perspectives, consider key ideas and identify bias.

Included is a one-page sheet that explains what primary sources are and how to analyze them using specific questions through a process called HAPPY. There is also a page at the end for students to apply the HAPPY process to one source.

Two DBQ prompts are included at the end with instructions on how to create a response to the prompt.

An Answer Key to all the comprehension questions and the DBQ prompts are available at the end of the packet.

This is excellent practice for all high school students, particularly Honors and AP students, but all students will find these resources engaging.

This is also available as a digital resource through Easel so students may complete it online.

Please check out my other Primary Source Analysis and DBQ Teaching Resources about Women's History

* Women of the American Revolution: DBQ's and Primary Sources
* Early Women's Rights 1840-1865: DBQ's and Primary Sources
* Women during the Industrial Era: DBQ's and Primary Sources
* Women's Suffrage Movement: 1865-1920: DBQs and Primary Sources
* Women during the 1920s: DBQs and Primary Sources
* Women in the U.S. Military during World War II: DBQ's and Primary Sources

More are always being added so check back frequently!

Do you love historical fiction? My novel, Hearts at War, features a white girl and a Japanese-American boy who are childhood friends whose growing attraction to one another in high school will be severed by war, family and social pressures once they enter college. They come of age in California and coincidence will throw them together again in the Pacific theater of war as they both serve in the military. Will they be able face the challenges of war and find a way back to each other? Available on Amazon or Kindle/Kindle Unlimited. Young Adults/Adults/Interracial Romance. I appreciate any reviews!

Thank you!

J.K. Rowling Biography Writing Unit Digital & Print | 3rd Grade & 4th Grade

By Creative Primary Literacy

This is a biography writing unit about the life of the famous English author of Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling. The unit has been split into four separate lessons which will take students approximately 40-50 minutes each.

The Google Slides activity is ideal for distance learning and perfect for students in third grade or fourth grade learning about World History, Harry Potter, or for Women's History Month.

⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻

The first lesson is interactive and involves students reading facts, and then sorting and ordering these facts into paragraphs. In the second lesson the children need to use these facts to type four paragraphs. Then, in the third lesson they need to choose the most important facts and include these in an introduction; after this they need to answer several questions before typing up their conclusion. In the final lesson your class will need to check their draft paragraphs before typing up their work on to the template provided.

⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻

This activity is an online resource, that uses Google Slides, and is linked to your Google Drive. It can be completed by students online using tablets or computers. If you are unsure how to allow the students to have their own individual copy take a look at the instructional video below:

Google Classroom - How to make a copy for each student - Assignment

The resource also comes in a PDF format, which can be printed.

If you would like to add another online lesson, download my J.K. Rowling 3rd Grade & 4th Grade Close Reading Activity | Digital & Print*. This would give the students more background knowledge before they start writing the biography. It comes in Google Forms and PDF formats for distance learning, or for printing.*

Please ensure when you download this resource into Google Drive that you are logged in to the gmail account where you wish to store the activity. In the past teachers have downloaded resources into their school account in error. Thanks :)

Rosa Parks | Figurative Language Short Passage Set | Women's History Month

By Perfectly Planned Designs

This Figurative Language Short Passage Set about Rosa Parks is a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. Use it during Women's History Month or any time of the year! Featuring Rosa Parks, this is a 216-word passage filled with 15 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! This figurative language passage set is rigorous, uses higher-level words and phrases, and in addition to merely identifying the different types, students will be asked to discuss the impact it has on the reader, as they’re asked to do on standardized testing. Check out my other figurative language passage sets here!

Simply print and go! There is truly no preparation needed, which is why this set is perfect to leave for sub plans, bell ringers, homework, test prep, review or assessment!

*As an optional review activity, use my No-prep Four Corners Figurative Language Activity resource for a fun whole-group game, then use this passage set for assessment!
Activity:
Students can complete all three worksheets as part of a packet, but I suggest using one each day. If you teach allusion, alliteration, idiom, or onomatopoeia, you can ask students to include those in Task 2 where they will be asked to continue the passage using a similar writing style. I have left some blanks on the checklist for this very purpose.

Reflection:
The class can review the answers and comments as a whole group when the activity is complete. You’ll be surprised how much better they’ll get at figurative language after being exposed to some high-quality examples!
