The Scarlet Letter Pre-Reading Activities | Puritan Era & Colonial New England
By TaughtOught Homeschooling
These three pre-reading activities are the perfect introduction to the literature unit for The Scarlet Letter by Nathanial Hawthorne. The activities are anticipatory and get students in the mindset of Puritan and Colonial New England life, put in the shoes of the community members of those times, learn some initial vocabulary, and have the opportunity to tie this all together by writing what they think the novel is about based on these pre-reading activities.
What does this product include?
How should I use these activities in the classroom?
You will ultimately determine how these three activities can be used, and they truly can be used in whichever order you see fit. And if you have a class full of students who are completely unfamiliar with the plot of The Scarlet Letter, I suggest completing the slideshow first, the Secret Sinner game second, and the worksheet third (or send it home as homework).
Grab the annotation-supported digital and print copy of the novel here.

✧ Geography Bell Ringers Bundle
✧ Geography Bell Ringers Individually
Every minute counts! As teachers, we are strapped for time. There simply doesn't seem to be enough time to teach all the necessary concepts or find time to prepare adequately for state testing! While you take roll, take up homework, and answer questions regarding late work, etc., have a quick bell warm-up activity for students to complete that will reinforce map, chart, and graph reading along with other higher-level thinking-skill questions. This will prepare your students for state testing! (Questions not included with this template, but can be found in our store).
Not only are these geography warm-up activity bell ringers for the beginning of class great transitions to start class and get students mentally ready for class, but it's also a great way to work in time for state test prep activities without all the extra work**.** Many of the social studies test questions require students to read, examine, and analyze maps, charts, graphs, etc. I have used bell ringers for years and I have seen an increase in students' abilities to read maps, graphs, and charts. It's worth your time and theirs!
This second set of bell ringers ask students to use their class atlases to read maps, graphs, and charts such as map projections, climate maps, time zone maps, population pyramids, and more. Although they are specified for the first six weeks, they can be used at any time throughout the year. The atlas used for reference is the Rand McNally 6th Edition found on Amazon for $15 found here. But many atlases can be used and are more affordable here. If you use another atlas, simply modify each slide to reference the map or page in the atlas you are using. The questions can remain the same.
Many educators struggle with the task of figuring out how to start class each day or how to transition from concept to concept. Due to the nature of switching class to class, students often struggle to mentally prepare to transition to a different subject. A popular solution to these problems is the idea of the beginning of the class warm-up bellringers. These start-of-class activities benefit both students and teachers.
A bell ringer, often referred to as a warm-up activity or a do-now, is a short exercise or prompt given to students at the beginning of class. These activities are designed to capture students' attention, activate prior knowledge, and set the tone for the rest of the lesson.
Note: Answers are in the presentation notes section within each slide.

ALTERNATIVE USE FOR TEMPLATE
I use questions from a book on everything from map reading from climate to culture to government. It is a great way to give them this practice. I suggest rather than coming up with your questions, get a book with practice questions. I display the question before class begins, and students know what to do as soon as they enter the door. They grab their Geojournal, sit down and complete the 2-3 question warm-up.
I can find questions relevant to what they were studying that week. When creating my lesson plans, it takes 10 minutes to choose the practice questions for the week. Here is the series of geography books that I used: (copy and paste if the link down does not work)
Where to find Daily Geography Practice Books:
✧Evan-Moore Site: https://www.evan-moor.com/social-studies-daily-practice
✧Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Daily-Geography-Practice-Grade-6/dp/1557999759
This book is called Daily Geography Practice. It is the best purchase I made for my geography classroom. Evan-Moore has grades 1-6. Even if you teach a higher grade level, these books are useful across grade levels. I purchased the 5th and 7th-grade versions and used them in my 7th-grade geography classroom.
Most classrooms now have projectors or smart boards and these can be used with either. I hope this helps and makes it easier to create bell work! This is the easiest thing I do or plan in the classroom with a great outcome.
Work smarter, not harder!

Women during World War I: Primary Sources and DBQ's * APUSH * US History * ELA
By Christa Nonnemaker
This 19-page resource with 22 primary sources, 16 comprehension questions and 2 DBQ prompts gives students a chance to look in depth at women's experiences and contributions during World War I. The first two pages include Background, Notes on Primary Sources and Teacher Notes.
Here’s a chance for students to read documents and look at images that shed light on issues facing women and facing the country during World War I. These include photographs, speeches, newspaper articles, posters, pamphlets and memoirs. For the first time, due to the men going overseas to fight, women were needed to take on men's tasks, in the factories and on the farms. Suffragists saw an opportunity to help support the war and their own cause. Additionally, African-Americans from the South, lured by jobs and opportunities in the North, came to the North in large numbers as part of the Great Migration. Some fallout from the war included the Spanish flu epidemic and the Red Scare, which affected women directly or indirectly.
Topics include the following:
Women Workers
Nurses during World War I
Suffrage and the War
Women Volunteers
African-American Women and the Great Migration
Life on the Home Front
Spanish Flu Epidemic
The Red Scare
Assign just one, a few or all of the sources depending on time constraints and student interest. This can be completed in one or two class periods.
Each page of primary sources includes comprehension questions at the end in order for students to analyze perspectives, consider key ideas and identify bias.
Included is a one-page sheet that explains what primary sources are and how to analyze them using specific questions through a process called HAPPY (Historical Context, Audience, Purpose, Point of View and Why Significant). There is also a page at the end for students to apply the HAPPY process to the sources.
Two DBQ prompts are included at the end with instructions on how to create a response to the prompt.
An Answer Key to all the comprehension questions and the DBQ prompts are available at the end of the packet. This is excellent practice for all high school students, particularly Honors and AP students, but all students will find these resources engaging.
Other Curriculum Resources about World War I include the following:
Women during World War I: Power Point Lesson
Women during World War I: Reading Assignment and Worksheet
All three resources are also available in a Teaching Bundle for a discounted price:

The Bill of Rights - What It Means To Me!
By YourTeachingDoc
Students often can/will recite the basics of SOME of the Bill of Rights but often do not know how they apply to their personal life. They believe that it was written years ago and does not have any relevant meaning to the HERE and NOW. With this interactive activity, my US History and Government classes dived into the Bill of Rights and learned how to apply each of the Amendments to their personal life. This brought about outstanding debates in class (and online) about civil rights and liberties.
This was created as a PDF document to use in the classroom. There is also a Digital Learning Format where it can be assigned to students to complete in a virtual setting such as Google Classroom, Canvas, etc.
I hope your students enjoy this as much as mine did!
