• Students use the template provided to create a podcast script with a partner that teaches other students about what AVID is and encourages them to join.
• Students create an "All About Me" digital collage by following the directions in the slides and using the example provided. Then share their design with an AVID classmate and explain why they picked each image.
• Students complete a selfie partner scavenger hunt with a partner around the school.
• Students open the linked Summer Break Bingo template and type in different activities they did over the summer. Then they find classmates who did the same activities and add their names to the bingo card.

Organization

• Students print out their school map and use a highlighter to draw a route to all their classes and follow the directions to label their maps.

This resource features a creative lesson plan that will actually keep your candy-filled students quiet and engaged on Halloween!

Halloween Collaborative Story Time is a communal story-telling activity in which students practice using Freytag's Pyramid plot structure in their own narrative writing. In this activity, each student begins a story inspired by a unique Halloween-themed photograph. They are prompted to write the exposition of the tale by introducing the setting and main characters. After the allotted amount of time, the story is then passed to another student who is prompted to write the inciting incident or conflict and begin to detail the rising action. The paper is passed from student to student twice more until the story is resolved. When the stories are finished, the worksheet is returned to the original student who can then make edits and is responsible for producing a final draft.

With this intrinsically engaging activity, each student has the chance to tap into their creativity while applying knowledge of the 7 steps of Freytag's Pyramid. It is a great activity to introduce or reinforce the plot diagram and is IDEAL for Halloween as it is so fun for students, yet designed as a nice quiet activity, regardless of the sugar rush! Since the lesson runs itself, it is also great for a substitute or on those days when you need a quick plan to get you through the day. I trust you will find that your students will ask for this activity again and again!

This Four Corners Game is a fun, no-prep activity you can use to review Figurative Language that your students will LOVE! They will love moving around the room as you click through the 40 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! After reading each figurative language example on the board, move to the side of the room labeled “Metaphor,” “Simile,” “Hyperbole,” or “Personification.” Be prepared to defend your choices. You may disagree with your classmates’ opinions but do so respectfully. (I typically go over each example with students and discuss the impact of the words or phrases to uncover the deeper meaning. Ask questions such as, "what is being compared?" or "what can the reader visualize?")

This book series is great for children ages 7 - 13, as they can relate with what Frank and Joe are doing and what mystery they are attempting to solve. The book, The HBs - Trouble at the Arcade - Book 1, discusses problem solving skills, working together as a team, listening to others ideas, and being a good friend/sibling. The comprehension questions in this product relate with the text as well as students own experiences. Vocabulary words, their meanings, and example sentences are presented in the packet. Students can also write sentences using the vocabulary words. As the book is being read aloud, as students are reading the book or after the book has been read, students can answer the comprehension questions in this packet. Words that students may need help with spelling when answering comprehension questions are provided in this product as well. An answer key is included at the back of this product for all comprehension questions
