DESCRIPTION

Students always need additional support in mastering the skill of inferencing. You can use the Freak the Mighty Multiple-Choice Inference Task Cards to help students practice making inferences.

Task Cards

  • The first set of 16 Inference Task Cards consists of a short selection/passage from the book followed by an inference-based question. There are four multiple choice answers choices that students choose from. Students read the passage and choose the correct answer. Students will need to pay close attention to details to choose the correct answer. The inference questions are centered around character traits, character relationships, and situations. A Student Answer Sheet is included for students to write their answers.

  • The second set of 16 Inference Task Cards is the actual “Answer Key” set. The Answer Key set of Task Cards highlight the correct multiple-choice answers in the color red and highlights relevant evidence that supports the correct answers in the color yellow.

  • This is engaging practice for your students as it is perfect for mini-lessons, whole class instruction, cooperative learning, intervention groups, literacy centers, and small group instruction.

Test Format Version (Print and Digital)

  • Also included is a "Test Format" version of the Inference Task Cards (same passages in the Task Cards). This includes an ANSWER KEY as well! The test consists of 16 multiple-choice inference questions.

Inference Graphic Organizer (Print and Digital)

  • Included is a one-page Three-Column Graphic Organizer Chart that requires students to make evidence-based inferences. Students record the following information in the Inference Graphic Organizer: Information from the text, their own Prior/Background Knowledge, and Inferences. This is a great scaffolding tool for ELL and Special Ed students.

Inference Bookmarks

  • These bookmarks include sentence stems consistent with making inferences. Students can reference these inference stems to stimulate their thinking, increase comprehension, and actively engage in reading and discussion. Students can also use these inference stems in their writing! These bookmarks can be used to support reading comprehension in any text.

Suggestions on how you can use the Multiple-Choice Inference Task Cards:

1. Quiz or Test - You can make a copy of the set of Task Cards and distribute to each student as a quiz or test. You, as the teacher , can then select the Task Card Inference question that students performed the lowest on and use that to review and develop/modify your instruction.

2. Small Group Instruction - You can have students engage in small group instruction where you provide additional support on the skill of inferencing. These Inference Task Cards will support that type of instruction. You can have all students in small groups practice with the same inference task card question number or you can distribute 1-2 Task Cards to each student to practice, then review.

3. Mini Lesson - You can load these Inference Task Cards on the Smartboard and use them to demonstrate how to make an inference. They can also be used to discuss the importance of details and how they are used to encourage inferential thinking. You can even use these Task Cards to discuss the difference between relevant details and irrelevant details. Finally, you can use these Inference Task Cards during the guided practice portion of your lesson.

4. Formative Assessment / Exit Slips - These Inference Task Cards make a great, quick formative assessment! You can easily check for understanding by distributing 1-2 Task Cards to each student to complete. You can circulate the room to do a "Quick Check" to see if students "Got it." You can also use these Task Cards as Exit Slips by distributing 1-2 Task Cards to each student to complete and hand in to you before they leave.

5. Partner Study - You can have students pair up and “test each other.” Partners not only ask each other to choose the correct multiple-choice answer, but to highlight or underline specific details in the selection/passage to support their inference-based answer. The Answer Key set of Task Cards are helpful in the sense that students can take ownership of reviewing the correct answers and sharing that with their partners**.**

6. Test Prep Review - You can use these Task Cards to review how to answer multiple-choice questions. You can also use these cards to teach students a variety of multiple-choice strategies (process of elimination, context clues, textual evidence, tone, etc.) to help them select the right answers to questions and aid comprehension.

FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE in POETRY: Analyze Poems w/ Metaphors, Similes, Symbols, etc

By Rigorous Resources for High School English

This 50-page EDITABLE poetry unit promises to elicit dynamic engagement from all students without compromising on intellectual rigor. The 12 poems in this unit pivot on the use of FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE: metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, etc.

Teach your students how to analyze figurative language through a series of engaging lessons on poems that students are guaranteed to love. The literary device quizzes, discussion prompts, and analytical writing assignment will challenge your students to dig beneath the surface of the text and generate profound interpretive insights!

Here are some highlights from this 50-page curriculum:

Homework Packets with Poems: The two homework packets contain a total of 12 poems by award-winning poets such as Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes, Elizabeth Bishop, Richard Wilbur, Sylvia Plath, Maya Angelou, Julia Alvarez, Mark Doty, Sharon Olds, and others. The poems in each homework packet derive their meaning from the deft use of sensory images. These carefully selected poems will set the stage for your class to have fascinating and profoundly productive discussions!! (12 pages)

Literary Devices Glossary: A glossary with definitions and examples of the various types of figurative language, imagery, stanzas, and syntactic devices. Many teachers already have a glossary of literary devices, but I'm providing this in case you need one. (2 pages)

Literary Devices Quizzes: Open each class with a quiz of 10 questions to assess whether your students can accurately identify the literary devices found in poems from the packet: metaphor, personification, symbolism, imagery, alliteration, etc. The digital versions of the quizzes on Google Forms will grade every student's work and generate a list of their scores. Answer keys included. (4 pages).

Discussion Questions: This bundle features a list of discussion questions for two poems in each of two homework packets. The discussion questions will ensure that your class discussions get off to a productive start. Every discussion question is grounded in concrete textual details and challenges students to arrive at lucid interpretive insights! The questions lend themselves to a range of different pedagogical uses: 1) to focus students’ thinking prior to beginning a discussion, 2) to prompt in-class writing, 3) to assign written reflections for homework, etc. Guaranteed to elicit student engagement and foster deep thinking! Answer keys included. (16 pages)

Quick Writes: The quick writes give students an opportunity to capture and refine the best ideas generated in the discussion. Quick writes can also help reticent students to gather their thoughts so they'll feel ready and eager to contribute. (4 pages)

Analytical Writing Assignment: Challenge students to take their interpretations one step further by writing an analytical paper on a poem of their choice. The assignment sheet contains detailed instructions for how to generate a formalist analysis of a poem (analyzing how the poem's formal features contribute to its meaning). This kind of formalist analysis is exactly what students are asked to generate on the AP Literature exam! Sample paper included. (3 pages)

This entire 50-page unit will come to you in two separate formats: Word *and* PDF. Because the Word doc is fully editable, you'll be able to customize the materials to suit the skill levels of your students — year after year! If you don't have Microsoft Word, you'll still be able to access all of the materials as a PDF — which is easy to navigate and quick to print! Finally, as a free bonus, I'm including links to digital copies of every document in user-friendly platforms like Google Docs and Google Forms.

My store is called “Rigorous Resources” because all of the resources contain rigorous content that will motivate students to engage in thought-provoking and productive discussions. Thank you for choosing “Rigorous Resources”!!

Happy teaching!

This resource works for any level of students and any reading. It can be used with novels, short stories, poetry, and even non-fiction. ESL Countries and Cities Speaking Listening Activity Taboo Game

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

ESL - ELL Taboo Game, Countries and Cities ❖

Playing TABOO in English is a great way to get ESL students to speak English and learn a lot of new vocabulary. This game focuses on different cities and countries around the world. It is simple to modify and use with beginners and advanced students alike. Advanced students try to get teammates to guess the word at the top of the card without saying any of the "taboo" words listed below. Beginner students can still play, but they should be allowed to use the "taboo" words to help learn new vocabulary and build sentences in English.

This ESL Taboo game includes the following:

40 Taboo game cards to print, cut out and laminate if possible

Color and black and white versions included

How to play

Object of the game:

One player tries to get his teammate to guess the word at the top of a card. The player must give clues, but he can't use any of the Taboo words in his description. The taboo words are written beneath the word at the top of the card. Teams score points for each word successfully guessed. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Beginner students should be allowed to use the TABOO words printed on the cards. This will encourage them to use new vocabulary and will help them in forming sentences to use as clues.

This resource is included in my ESL - ELL speaking, listening, writing activities and games - Growing bundle.

Fry Sight Word Checklist, Sight Words Flash Cards (10th 100)

By The Responsive Educator

Fry Sight Words Checklist, Sight Words Flash Cards 10th 100

Advancing further in sight word mastery, the Fry Sight Words, Sight Words Flash Cards Checklist 10th 100 continues the comprehensive assessment initiated with the preceding sets of 100 Fry sight words.

Key Features
Maintaining the meticulous design, this checklist encompasses the final 100 Fry sight words, retaining the familiar layout of 9 columns per page. Each column provides space for date recording, staff signatures, word tracking, and percentage calculations, ensuring consistent and thorough assessment across multiple practice sessions.

Available in both full-color and black-and-white versions, this resource remains adaptable for various printing needs, ensuring suitability for diverse classroom settings.

Focused Goal Setting
Continuing to aid educators, the Fry Sight Words Checklist 10th 100 facilitates precise IEP goal setting aligned with the last set of 100 Fry sight words.

Complementary Practice Tools
Supplementary to the checklist, dedicated flashcards designed for the tenth set of 100 Fry sight words offer crucial reinforcement and practice support, fostering a consistent and effective learning experience.

Why Learning the 10th 100 Fry Sight Words Matters
Extending beyond prior word sets, mastering this final grouping significantly enriches reading capabilities and overall language proficiency. This resource marks a crucial milestone in advancing reading fluency, strengthening confidence, and nurturing sustained reading development.

Advantages of Fry Words over Dolch Words The Fry Sight Words list is organized into 10 groups of 100 words each, covering the most frequently used words in writing. Starting with the initial 300 words in early education significantly boosts reading and comprehension skills. While Fry words aren't strictly tied to specific grades, they're usually introduced in sets of 100 words to support gradual sight word recognition. Here's a general guide for introducing these sets:

  • First 100 Fry Words: Typically introduced in kindergarten and first grade.
  • Second 100 Fry Words: Taught in first or second grade, reinforcing foundational words.
  • Third 100 Fry Words: Added in second or third grade, including more complex words.
  • Fourth 100 Fry Words: Introduced in third or fourth grade, advancing vocabulary.
  • Fifth 100 Fry Words: Presented in fourth or fifth grade, offering more challenging words.

The 6th to 10th sets of 100 Fry words are usually introduced later, depending on the student's mastered words.

Discussion-Based Toolkit | Socratic Seminar Grading Rubrics | Harkness Discussion Trackers

By Rigorous Resources for High School English

Toolkit for discussion-based teaching! This 10-page editable document includes participation evaluation worksheets, role-playing exercises, and discussion trackers that you might use to improve your Harkness discussions and socratic seminars.

Here is what you'll get in this 10-page document:

Participation Self-Evaluation Worksheets: The first two handouts will invite students to reflect on how well they are listening, thinking, speaking, asking questions, and using evidence. These editable handouts can be used as a student self-evaluation worksheet; or they can be used by the teacher to provide feedback and grades on students' participation. (2 pages)

Formulating Questions Handout: This handout provides students with advice about how to formulate effective questions. Whether your class is about to embark on a series of student led-discussions, or your class is about to write papers about topics of their choosing, this handout will help them to formulate genuine interpretive questions that are grounded in concrete textual evidence. (1 page)

Discussion Role-Playing Exercise: Challenge your students to develop their discussion skills by assigning each student a particular role to play during a discussion. This handout contains a list of roles such as "questioner," "text referencer," "clarifier," "focuser," and so on. The experience of playing these roles will help your students to develop concrete skills and to expand their awareness of the range of different contributions they can make to a discussion. At the same time, it will prompt students to reflect upon the discussion skills they exercise habitually as well as the ones they experience as more challenging. (3 pages)

Harkness Discussion Trackers: Four discussion tracking sheets will enable you to keep track of how many times each student spoke during a Harkness discussion. The trackers also feature "keys" that will enable you to keep track of the kinds of contributions made by each student: questions, textual references, building comments, etc. The keys are editable so that you decide to track the particular skills that your class may be working on at any given moment in the year. Want to track when your students work through a constructive disagreement? Just add "CD" to the tracking key! (4 pages)

My store is called “Rigorous Resources” because all of the units feature rigorous, content-rich lessons guaranteed to boost your students' close-reading and critical-thinking skills. All of the units in my store are designed to foster vibrant discussion-based learning!!
